THE GUIDES ASSOCIATION OF NYC presents:

THE GANYC E-NEWS BLAST

It's time to rock the vote! Ballots for the GANYC Board elections will be mailed out to all full, voting members of the association next week. All positions will be up for a vote: President, Vice President (2), Treasurer, Secretary (2), and Member-at-Large (3). All positions are for a 2-year term. The ballots will come with stamped, self-addressed envelopes so that you can easily return your completed ballots. This is an anonymous process that will be overseen by our amazing Election Committee. And we have a very full crop of candidates this year! We urge members to take their responsibility seriously, as it is up to you to choose who represents GANYC to the world, and who will carry forward its mission on your behalf. The winners will be revealed at the December membership meeting.

All members will also soon be receiving emails & info from the Treasurer + Membership Committee to begin the process of membership renewals. We hope that all of you will continue to be a part of our association through 2020... we intend to take the progress we've made in 2019 and keep going bigger and better. Info on insurance renewal will come soon when we get final details on the 2020 premiums and policies.

And save the date! The GANYC post-holiday party will be Monday, January 13 from 7-11pm in Times Square. More details will come soon.

On a less exciting note, we remind members of a change to policy regarding fam tours. Starting today, which is the start of GANYC's fiscal year, the fee for no-shows goes up to $25 (those arriving exceptionally late may also count as a no-show). If the wait-list to an event exceeds 5 people, the fee would double to $50. To avoid penalties, members should cancel 48 hours or more in advance.

This policy is because we must all expect of ourselves a degree of professionalism, and expect of our behavior what we expect of our customers & clients. Signing up for these events (which we are proud are increasingly well attended) constitutes a commitment on a members part. For instance, we had nearly 100 instances this past fiscal year where members no-showed a fam, a staggering number. A recent visit to the Federal Reserve had a waitlist of 17 members... those who no-showed robbed their fellow members of a great experience. GANYC simply asks that we all be respectful of each others time.

Also: members who no-show 3+ fam tours or site inspections in a fiscal year will be banned from such events for a period of 12 months.

Please do not cancel by emailing the guide or a specific committee. In order to ensure that their cancellation is processed timely, members must cancel themselves via WildApricot. Please note WildApricot currently has no option to do this in the app, and so it must be done in a web browser. Make sure you are actively logged into your WildApricot account. Then, go to your main profile page on WildApricot, and click on "My event registrations" in the middle menu. Click on the specific event you are canceling. It should say "Already registered" -- click on that. On the following page, look for the button that says "Cancel registration" and confirm. Click that, it will remove you from the event registrants, and the appropriate GANYC personnel will be notified in real time.

We appreciate everyone's understanding of the new policy.

On a lighter note, we are already at work planning the 6th annual GANYC Apple Awards (being held Monday March 2, hosted by the Bowery Boys!). As part of that, we will be launching a special social media campaign over several months. If anyone has been nominated for or presented an Apple award and you have a special event (tour/lecture/book signing/etc) being offered only in December - please let us know about it, so we can spotlight you!

Finally, enjoy some photos from recent fam tours... many members continue to be generous in donating their time to provide these great experiences!
And don't forget to check out the GANYC Announcement page, discussion forums, blog, and social sites to stay on top of all the happenings in the NYC tour world.

When New York Was Nieuw Amsterdam
with Joe Svehlak

What’s left of old Dutch New York? Where were the windmills, the canals, the  first church, and the fort? Where did the girls go to do the laundry, and where did the boys go to graze the cattle?

In conjunction with the Dutch Days celebration, join Joe Svehlak for a look at New York’s Dutch roots in Downtown Manhattan over four centuries ago. Walking downtown’s old streets and the original shoreline, we’ll learn about our Dutch legacy of commerce and tolerance. Hear about the diverse immigrant population, the problems they faced, and the part they played in the foundation of our democratic society.

Grand Central Terminal Revisited
with Joe Svehlak

A festive Grand Central awaits us at the holiday season with the train show and the Holiday Market. It's at the top of list of Joe Svehlak's favorite places. For several years, he was one of the Municipal Art Society principal guides here on their free weekly walks before they switched to the current docent-led tours.

Take an in-depth tour of this iconic building as Joe shares insights gathered over the years about the art, the stone work, and the restoration. This can be a mutual learning experience about taking large groups in and around the Terminal as we revisit Grand Central's special places and share its secrets.

The tour should be fun and a learning experience since Grand Central is such a wonderful place on many levels: art, architecture, planning and preservation, and the history of railroading in NYC.

As we stroll, your guide will discuss the history & evolution of graffiti art, and the many different types and sub-genres (tags, murals, stencils, wheatpaste, etc). You'll have ample opportunity to ask questions and take amazing photos of works by artists such as Icy & Sot, Jerkface, Don Rimx, Lister, Phetus, Danielle Mastrion, and many more!

This tour will end with a visit to a local gallery.
