LAWTON DOLPHIN EXTENDED FAMILY
🐬Thanks, Dolphin Grandparents!

Exciting news—this week only, an anonymous Dolphin grandparent has offered to match donations from grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other extended family and friends! So, let's get matching!

We are thankful for their love and generosity!

Please make sure to share this Direct Drive link with all of your extended family!
We are entering the last few weeks of Direct Drive, and so far 70% of the Lawton community have participated. Thank you! Last year, we were able to get over 95% participation, so if you have not done so, please participate right away

Armstrong Strong! Congratulations to Mrs. Armstrong’s class hitting 100% participation! The kids loved having their class be recognized over the PA system. Enjoy that extra recess!

Which class will be next? Mrs. Fatland? Mrs. Polik?
100% classroom participation = EXTRA recess!

Participation does not mean you have to donate, but since public education is not fully funded in Washington state, every dollar means so much to our children and teachers.

To celebrate the end of Direct Drive, we will all come together as a community at the Fall Festival and dance the night away on Friday, November 8th. So be part of the celebration and participate now!

SCHOOL SPIRIT DAY: SILLY SOCKS
Don't forget that this Friday, November 1st is a School Spirit Day. Don't forget to wear your silliest socks!
FALL FOOD DRIVE
Lawton's annual Fall Food Drive begins this Friday, November 1st! All food and grocery gift cards collected go to families in need right here at school!

You can help fellow Lawton families provide nutritious meals for their children during school breaks in November and December. Many families count on school breakfasts and lunches for their children, making long school vacation closures particularly difficult.

WHAT IS NEEDED

GROCERY GIFT CARDS
Fred Meyer and QFC grocery gift cards help families to buy perishable items. While these two stores work well for families, we will take a gift card donation to any grocery store.

BREAKFAST, SNACK, AND LUNCH ITEMS
Please send in food that your own children would eat. Simple items that kids can open and eat without preparing are an immense help! Examples include:
  • cereal
  • canned soups
  • pasta
  • granola bars
  • crackers
  • applesauce (no sugar added)
  • shelf-stable milk or milk alternatives (almond/soy)
  • any other non-perishable items your student eats
Grocery gift card donations need to be turned in to the office in an envelope labeled "Community Outreach." Donation bins will be set up in the entryway of the school for food donations.

A SPECIAL APPEAL
Expired food cannot be used, and last year, volunteers had to take home boxes of expired food to dispose of in a safe manner. Please check those expiration dates!! Thank you so much for helping to support our families in need right here at Lawton!

ADMISSION INTO THE FALL FESTIVAL
Please bring in a non-perishable food item as your admittance into the Fall Festival.

Any questions? Please reply to this newsletter, and we'll get you in touch with our Community Outreach chair, Jamie Hoskinson
GET EXCITED...DJ DANCE DUDE IS BACK!
AND WE NEED IN-SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS
(NO DANCING REQUIRED!)
DJ Dance Dude will be at Lawton during the school day Monday, November 4th - Friday, November 8th! Every day, each grade level will spend their PCP time learning a dance with the Dance Dude, Ms. Volk, Ms. Cooper, and Ms. Kohler

They are looking for 1-2 volunteers to help organize and monitor students. No dancing required! We are so grateful for your help!!

Please check this SignUp Genius link to find out when your child(ren) will be participating.
HALLOWEEN CANDY CHALLENGE
Donate candy for a worthy cause!
Do your kids plan to go out on Thursday and collect as much candy as possible? Does it pain you to know how much sugar they'll bring back home? Well, now you don't have to worry! Ms. Volk is collecting candy donations for Camp Murray.
  • Monday, November 4th - Friday, November 8th: Candy can be donated in the gym. Please do not bring in candy before the 4th.
  • The class with the most candy gets a free PE day! (One class from the K-1, 2-3, and 4-5 grade level groups).
  • Candy must be labeled with names and room numbers for classroom credit.
  • Camp Murray uses the donated candy to send to troops overseas during the holidays as well as to keep for snacks on the base during the year.
Ms. Volk and the PE Committee need volunteers to help weigh the candy right after school on Friday, November 8th. Have a few minutes to spare? Sign up here
FALL FESTIVAL
2nd Grade Family Volunteers Needed
Come celebrate the season with your family and the Lawton community at this FUN PTA sponsored event.
  • Please bring food items to donate to the Fall Food Drive as admission.
  • Glow sticks will be given out to the first 100 guests with a food donation.
DJ Dance Dude will be at Lawton the week leading up to the Fall Festival teaching Lawton kids dance moves, new and old! Dancing is great exercise and a lot of FUN! It gets very hot on the dance floor. Please leave coats at home and dress for a sweaty good time.

Did you know Lawton is a Green School? In an effort to reduce waste, we will not be selling water bottles or providing cups for water. Please bring a labeled water bottle from home.

In order to make this event a success, we need the help of volunteers before, during and after the event. If you are a 2nd grade parent attending the event, please visit this SignUp Genius for available volunteer spots. While this event is for all Lawton families, we are looking for 2nd grade parents to volunteer first.

Any questions? Please contact Sara Kadletz.

Thank you!
VETERANS DAY ASSEMBLY
On Friday, November 8th, Lawton will hold its annual Veterans Day Assembly. Lawton invites any of our Lawton family members or local community members to attend this assembly.

If you know a veteran interested in speaking with our students on the importance of remembrance, please contact Assistant Principal Barbara Dixon. Thank you!
ADVOCACY:
ADVANCED LEARNING & HIGHLY CAPABLE
With nearly 54,000 students in our district, Seattle Public Schools strives to offer programs and services that meet the diverse needs of its student population. For students demonstrating an "exceptional ability or potential to learn and reason beyond their same-age classmates," SPS offers two designations for those eligible:
  1. Highly Capable (HC) Services/Opportunities for eligible students in grades K-12 provide differentiated practices unique to each building. Read more about Seattle Public Schools Highly Capable Services.
  2. Advanced Learning (AL) Services, for students in grades 1-8 who demonstrate high academic achievement, but who do not meet the definition of Highly Capable, are served in their neighborhood schools. Read more about K-8 Advanced Learning Services and Opportunities.
There is a current task force in place to investigate how to make the identification, eligibility, and testing more equitable. Your opinions are encouraged. For more background on Advanced Learning and HCC, visit:
Also, if your child is eligible for the HC (highly capable) program, but your family chose to stay at Lawton, please consider filling out this survey. We know that 17% of students who test as eligible for the HC program do NOT enroll in it, so it is particularly important for the task force to hear from families who chose to keep their HC eligible children at neighborhood schools:
