DUG Network
Mid-October Urban Gardener Newsletter

Hello Gardeners!

If you're receiving this newsletter for the first time welcome!

We recently partnered with the amazing folks who manage Rooting DC, DC's Annual Urban Ag Festival, to increase the number of people receiving this free, solicitation-free, all volunteer managed, newsletter.

Rooting DC and DUG Network both share a common goal to promote, support and grow through building connections, the DC urban Ag movement.  Since Rooting DC only focuses on one amazing event a year, we decided to partner and continue Rooting DC's mission by combining our email lists for the DUG Newsletter to continue promoting, supporting and connecting people in the Urban Ag movement all year long.

Although its super easy to unsubscribe to this newsletter at anytime, please take a second to check it out first.   The DUG Network newsletter is a comprehensive list of workshops, events, programs, job openings, grants and gardening tips for the urban AG, food security and environmental world, happening in the greater DC area.

We send a newsletter out every two weeks, and 1-3 times a year (3 is our self imposed max) we highlight an urgent and important cause or program (never a solicitation).  We're very sensitive about not overloading anyone's inbox.  Also the DUG Network is managed by an all volunteer cooperative that does not try to profit in any way.

Check Out The DUG Network Resource Website

DUG Network also has an amazing website promoting over 500 different urban Ag, food security and environmental organizations and resources operating in the greater DC area.

Need Help Promoting an Event or Resource?

If you know of any garden, food and environmental events or opportunities that the community should know about, please email us the details (you can just respond to this e-mail) to include in the next newsletter.

Need Help Bringing this Newsletter Beyond the Computer

In addition, we need your help to bring awareness to all these amazing resources to all people in DC regardless if they have access to a computer or not.  We're looking for people or organizations that can help us print and post this newsletter so people without regular computer access can see these reources.  If you can help us print this newsletter and post it in any public place( libraries, community centers, coffee shops, barber shops, etc) please let us know.

Recruiting Local Writers for "DUG’s Community Platform"
At this time DUG is now accepting written materials and journalism pieces with a finger on the pulse about gardening and agriculture in the City. With guidance from our community feedback form, we are looking for stories which connect to those most involved and impacted by local gardening and agriculture work. Let’s talk more about the dynamics of educating children about urban agriculture! What does is mean to search for nutritious foods in food apartheid sections of D.C.? Where does small-scale community gardening go from here? Biodiversity anyone?! We are interested in your thoughts and critical perspectives of what’s happening now and what’s to come in the future. Whether you are interested in providing some ideas, or writing something for publishing, please visit

A cost-benefit analysis will be used to shed light on possible explanations for their low adoption. DC’s First Food Runner Program "Food Rescue US"
One of the biggest barriers to donating food is transportation. Food Rescue, a national food rescue platform, is a FREE food runner app that coordinates volunteers to help transport food that would normally be thrown away (40% of all food ends of in the dump!) from a donor (restaurant, grocery, caterer, farmers market, event, etc.) to a place that feeds people in need. Food Rescue US is looking for volunteers, food donors, receiving organizations, and anyone who wants to lend a helping hand. Please email Kate Urbank, the DC Site Director, at kate@foodrescue.us with any ideas or questions and sign up at www.foodrescue.us to volunteer or receive more information

The Seed Underground pays tribute to time-honored and threatened varieties, deconstructs the politics and genetics of seeds, and reveals the astonishing characters who grow, study, and save them."

WWF Internship Future of Vertical Ag
This internship provides an opportunity for a graduate student with experience in agriculture, ideally indoor, soil-less agriculture, to contribute to research at the intersection of environmental and financial sustainability. WWF is examining the indoor and vertical soil-less farming industry. At scale, this method of farming could reduce pressures on land, biodiversity, natural habitat, and climate, but to get there it has to overcome several key hurdles that prevent it from moving beyond its current specialization in high-end leafy greens. We want to help farms overcome those hurdles, such as ones related to energy and labor, and move the industry forward. Whether this is possible will depend greatly on what will happen across LED, energy, and other related fields in the next few years.

Return Plastic Bags to Retailers

from ZerowasteDC

Recycle Plastic Film
dfdfdfdfdf
fdfd

While we need to keep plastic bags and wraps out of curbside recycling bins, these items can be recycled into new products through dropping them off at participating retailers. Common household items such as bread bags, produce bags, beverage multi-pack wraps, zip top food storage bags, and paper towel and bathroom tissue overwraps are recyclable, along with grocery and retail bags. Generally, clear bags and wraps that are not “crinkly” or easily torn are made of recyclable polyethylene (PE, #2 or #4 plastic) and can be made into items such as new plastic bags and plastic lumber.

Still not sure what items need to be dropped off at participating retailers? Check for a How2Reycle label on the packaging for instructions. The most important rule is CLEAN AND DRY! Make sure there is no water, other liquid residue or food in your bags and wraps when you recycle them. Separate cardboard from beverage overwraps and put the cardboard in your curbside bin. Also, don’t put any plastic containers in store bins – only bags and films. Printing on bags and wraps is OK, but large paper labels should be removed.
