1. FinCEAL+ BRIDGES Seminar: Sustainable Development Goals and Partnerships for Transformation, 20 November, Helsinki

2. FinCEAL+ BRIDGES Project Closes Rolling Call for Grants under the Partnership Support Instrument
The FinCEAL+ BRIDGES project has closed the rolling Call for grants under the Partnership Support Instrument for 2019 as of 31 October 2019. Stay tuned to our web pages for possible re-opening of this Call in 2020. 

3. FinCEAL+ BRIDGES Delegation to the European Research and Innovation Days reflects on the event and related visits in Brussels
The first annual policy event of the European Commission organized in Brussels on 24th-26th of September gathered world leaders from academia, business, industry and finance to co-design and discuss the future research and innovation landscape and to help plan Horizon Europe. FinCEAL+ BRIDGES organized a delegation of senior members of Finnish academia to attend the event. Find out more here!

4. FinCEAL+ BRIDGES Asia Participated in the High-level, "EU-Asia Connectivity – Building BRIDGES for a Sustainable Future: Europa Connectivity Forum", in Brussels, Belgium
On 27 September the European Commission (EC) launched its Europa Connectivity forum – an innovative multi-stakeholder international conference aimed at a dialogue between EU and Asia and strengthening ties between governments, financial institutions and private sector actors in Europe and in Asia. High-level political leaders including the Prime Minister of Finland Antti Rinne, the President Emeritus of the European Council, Prime Minister of Croatia and Ministers from Republic of North Macedonia, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, and the Republic of Korea took part in the Forum. 5. FinCEAL Infobank: Add and edit project information, and create a researcher profile to showcase your expertise!
The FinCEAL Infobank now includes a dedicated expert database, a new function that avails more services and greater utility to the researchers in Finland and their partners abroad. All Infobank users can now benefit from increased visibility for their own expertise, identify potential cooperation partners and engage in knowledge exchange with peers directly and quicker. The database is also used by Finnish ministries and missions abroad to identify experts for different purposes. Find out more about the exciting update here and how to register yourself as an expert!

FinCEAL+ BRIDGES Africa Event Grantee Professor Mikko Ruohonen of Tampere University and the State University of Zanzibar co-organised "SUZA 2019: Sustainable ICT, Education and Learning" from 25-27 April in Zanzibar, Tanzania 
Tampere University (TAU) and the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) successfully organised and hosted an IFIP WG 3.4 conference, “SUZA 2019: Sustainable ICT, Education and Learning” from 25-27 of April in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The conference was organised back to back with the 15th International Conference on Social Implications of Computers in Developing countries – IFIP WG 9.4 conference track from 1-3 May 2019 at Dar Es Salaam.

FinCEAL+ BRIDGES Asia Travel Grantee Marko Kallio of Aalto University attended the 8th ASEM Sustainable Development Dialogue: Enhancing Water Partnership Towards Sustainable Development and Inclusive Growth, from 19-20 September in Siem Reap City, Cambodia
The 8th ASEM conference on Sustainable Development dialogue was hosted by the Cambodia National Mekong Committee (CNMC), an Inter-Ministerial Institution of the Royal Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia for coordinating the sustainable management and development of the Mekong River Basin, in cooperation with its key member line agencies. ASEM-SDD consisted of a wide range of topics centered around sustainable development, but all of which involved water in one way or another. Finland was represented by Mr. Marko Kallio, from the Aalto University.

Finland's presidency of the Council of the European Union - Official Side events

Europe That Protects: Safeguarding Our Planet, Safeguarding Our Health, 3-4 December, Helsinki
The conference "Europe that Protects" brings together the relevant stakeholders; researchers, policy makers, and regulators, to identify and discuss the main scientific challenges for harvesting and enhancing the benefits of a sound environment for human health and the scientific challenges for solutions to overcome environmental threats to human health. The conference aims to outline recommendations on research and innovation priorities for the EU and Member States to work together to protect human health and our planet. This event is co-organised by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, the Finnish Environment Institute and the European Commission under the auspices of Finland’s Presidency of the EU in 2019.

H2020 Future and emerging technologies FET - Open Calls
FET Open supports early stage science and technology research exploring new foundations for radically new future technologies by challenging current paradigms and venturing into unknown areas. A bottom-up selection process widely open to any research idea builds up a diverse portfolio of new research directions. Early detection of promising new areas, developments and trends, along with attracting new and high-potential research and innovation players, are key factors. More information

H2020 Energy Efficiency Call 2020 - Open Calls
The last Work Programme for Secure, Clean and Efficient Energy under Horizon 2020 was published on 2 July 2019. It is designed to facilitate a smooth transition to the future Horizon Europe and LIFE programmes. The two intervention areas:  "Buildings in energy transition" (B4E), and “Smart and clean energy for consumers” (EC) bring together 18 topics focusing on energy efficiency as a cornerstone of the energy transition. Horizon 2020 ERA-NET Cofund & CSA 2020 - Open Calls
The ERA-NET Cofund instrument under Horizon 2020 implements the co-funded joint call for proposals that leads to the funding of trans-national research and/or innovation projects. The European Commission has launched the final round of calls for the ERA-NET Cofunds on 10 different topics. NordForsk - New Call for Proposals for Interdisciplinary Research
NordForsk’s new programme aims to promote high-quality interdisciplinary research that combines and integrate skills from multiple disciplines. The programme specifically targets genuinely interdisciplinary projects that combine disciplines which are far removed from one another and rarely collaborate, or that pursue an original research question requiring the exact combination of competencies from different disciplines proposed in the application. Projects awarded funding under the programme are required to encompass research within at least two of the three areas of science as used by the European Research Council: Life science; Physical Sciences & Engineering; Social Sciences and Humanities. Submission deadline for the first call is 13 November 2019. Business Finland Health Tuesday, "Possibilities of Utilizing Health Data", 5 November, Helsinki + 5 locations in Finland
Health Tuesday provides an excellent platform for participants to network, discuss and share ideas with Business Finland’s advisers from abroad during the networking session and round table sessions. In October, a round table session on market opportunities in UK is organised after the main event from 9:30-10:30. Health Tuesday is live-streamed to 5 parallel events in: Jyväskylä, Kuopio, Oulu, Tampere & Turku. SAPEA Science Advice Symposium, "The future of science advice in Europe", 13 November, Helsinki
SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) will host a one-day symposium bringing together leading practitioners and scholars to reflect on emerging trends, weak signals, and promising opportunities for developing next-generation science advice capabilities. The event is co-organised by: the Finnish Academy of Sciences and Letters, the Academy of Finland, the Prime Minister’s Office of Finland, and the Ministry of Education and Culture. Global Science, Technology and Innovation Conference (G-STIC) 2019, 20-22 November, Brussels Belgium
G-STIC is conference series focused on building knowledge bases and global networks to support the technological transitions needed for the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. Themed, ‘Creating an Impact on the Achievement of the SDGs,’ G-STIC 2019 will build on the results of previous editions in addition to discussing the policy changes needed for the technological transition to sustainable societies. The different thematic sessions will dive deeper into integrated technological solutions with significant impact on the SDGs, and further strengthen the multi-stakeholder communities around the different thematic clusters of G-STIC. World Science Forum 2019, "Science, Ethics, and Responsibility", 20-23 November, Budapest, Hungary
The World Science Forum series of events takes place every two years and returns to Budapest Hungary for its 20th anniversary. The goal of the forum is to foster and maintain dialogue between the scientific community, science, policy makers, and industry. The Forum also serves to emphasize the significance, relevance and responsibilities of science on a global scale by acting as a point of reference for policy makers from science, society and politics. Arctic Futures Symposium: 10th Edition, 25 November, Brussels, Belgium
Arctic Futures Symposium is an annual event bringing together Arctic stakeholders, the EU community and the public to discuss challenges facing the Arctic. Registration details and more information

EU Design Days: Sustainability and Circular Economy, 26 November, Brussels, Belgium
EU Design Days brings together experts, practitioners, designers, researchers and policymakers to discuss about design-related creative innovation systems and co-creative collaborations. In addition to gaining new knowledge, participants will also get the much needed opportunity to build their networks, meet friends and join interactive workshop sessions. The focus of Design Days 2019 is sustainability and circular economy. Registration will open in October. More information

OECD Green Growth and Sustainable Development (GGSD) Forum, "Greening Heavy and Extractive Industries: Innovation and fiscal implications", 26-27 November, Paris, France. 
The GGSD Forum 2019 will address how the shift to a circular and low-carbon economy, required to meet several of the Sustainable Development Goals, might impact future demand and business models of the extractive and heavy industries such as oil and gas, mining, steel and cement, as well as its fiscal implications. National education sector development cooperation seminar, 26-27 November, Helsinki
The Finnish National Agency for Education EDUFI, The Ministry of Education and Culture, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs (MFA) and FINGO invite education sector experts to an event about solving the global learning crisis and identifying successful multi-stakeholder collaboration models. The MFA is taking steps to develop comprehensive country strategies in the next country strategy period, starting 2021. The aim is to define the Ministry’s objectives for Finland’s cooperation with the partner country, describe the scope of the Finnish activities and the available MFA means and instruments for reaching the objectives. This requires coherence between the activities and instruments, as well as stronger synergy and inter-linkages between actors. Session proposals can be submitted in English or Finnish by 1.10.2019. The Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) Stakeholder Forum 2019, 4 December, Brussels, Belgium
The 2019 stakeholder forum will bring together the bio-based industries community and facilitate open discussion on the impact, achievements, strategic direction of the BBI JU programme, and the latest developments in the BBI sector. The Forum targets industry, SMEs, academia, research, policy, opinion leaders, EU community and the entire BBI Community. 4th International Conference on Global Food Security, "Achieving local and global food security: at what costs?" 16-19 June 2020, Montpellier, France
The conference addresses the triple burden of malnutrition: hunger, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity. It also explores the state-of-the-art of interdisciplinary insight, addresses the trade-offs that occur – and synergies that can be sought –in transforming food systems. These are aimed at reconciling the competing environmental, economic or social objectives and outcomes towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals at different levels across spatial and temporal scales.  more information!

The 4th ISA Forum of Sociology, "Challenges of the 21st Century: Democracy, Environment, Inequalities, Intersectionality", 14-18 July, 2020, Porto Alegre, Brazil - Save the Date!
ISA 2020 forum will provide a platform for sociological analyses of these four global challenges with a focus on their interconnections and to possible solutions. The Forum will delve into how both progressive and conservative actors and movements tackle these challenges and their conflictive perspectives as well as ask how our discipline has been meeting these four global challenges and it has been transformed by them. The New Africa-EU Agenda: Towards more sustainable trade and governance in Agri-food value chains, 15 November, Helsinki 
The seminar brings together researchers, policymakers, and private sector, to present and discuss new developments in the Africa-EU Agenda for Rural Transformation. Seminar will focus on responsible trade, investment, and governance in the context of food systems and small holder value chains from multiple perspectives and will contribute to a stakeholder-based implementation of the Task Force Rural Africa report on the Africa-Europe agenda. "Africa and the Fourth Industrial Revolution: Defining a Role for Research Universities", 18-20 November, Nairobi, Kenya
How should universities prepare the student for the digital future? What research will support the production of goods and services in Africa in the new digital age? What relevant research will generate answers to questions about how to deal with the fall-out from the new revolution? These questions will be in focus at ARUA 2019 conference where international experts from academia, government, industry, as well as from civil society will deliberate  and pave the way for nurturing and supporting the Fourth Industrial Revolution in Africa. Participation details and more information

Think Africa Week is a week-long annual program that seeks to highlight and support the fast growing interest in possibilities and opportunities between Finland and countries in Africa.

French-South-African Science and Innovation Days, 2-3 December, Pretoria, South Africa
The first French-South African Science and Innovation days aim to promote cooperation in research, training,  and innovation between the two countries, and to stimulate it in the light of the challenges South Africa faces. The event targets: scientists, students, start-upers, civil servants, business and innovators. The first French - South African Science and Innovation Days will be held as a side-event of the Science Forum South Africa. More information

Innovation Africa 2019, 3-5 December, Accra, Ghana
Innovation Africa is a high level ministerial forum where industry and policy makers come together through pre-scheduled meetings for thorough and practice oriented conversation. The summit features committed engagement with ministers and senior government officials from over 40 countries. It is Africa’s “must go to” event for education, innovation and ICT. Asian Studies Days 2019: Science and University Policies in Asia, 26-27 November, University of Turku
This year, the goal of the Asian Studies Days is to discuss topical science and university policies in Asian countries and the prospects and challenges in the implementation of those policies domestically and globally. The event will generate knowledge of the specific features in the academic environment in Asian countries and crucial information when pursuing cooperation with Asian actors. The discussions will help to develop realistic and sustainable cooperation with Asian countries in the field of science, technology and education. Registration details and more information 

15th ASEF Classroom Network Conference: “Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and AI - The Role and Readiness of Teachers”, 25-29 November, Tokyo, Japan
ASEF ClassNet15 will promote a detailed discussion on ESD and provide a brief introduction on emerging AI technologies in education. The conference will facilitate a robust action-oriented dialogue on ESD, AI, and the role and readiness of teachers by providing a multi stakeholder platform for secondary/high schools and vocational school teachers, researchers, policy makers and EdTech leaders to:
  • Raise awareness and build knowledge on the topic “Education for Sustainable Development and AI: The Role and Readiness of Teachers” as an integrative element in teaching and learning in secondary, high, and vocational school education, through case-studies and practical tools;
  • Encourage schools to join an active Asia-Europe network and to initiate collaboration and support for creating holistic and timely relevant future learning environments; and
  • Gather feedback from teachers to suggest policy recommendations to education policy makers and governments to integrate ESD into curricula with the help of AI tools.

Asia-Europe Sustainable Connectivity Conference (AESCON): Strengthening Asia-Europe Links through Data and Research, 26-28 February 2020, Singapore
AESCON is the first scientific conference on Asia-Europe sustainable connectivity. At a time of increasing connectivity, the conference aims to provide an academic forum to discuss global challenges on transport infrastructure, energy transition, climate change, digital economy, trade and investment flows, security, people mobility, cultural exchanges, among others. The conference targets researchers and policy analysts working in the field of international connectivity, globalization and on sustainable development, with a particular focus on Asia-Europe connections.  More information

The International Higher Education Fair of Argentina (FIESA) 2020, 17-20 March 2020, Buenos Aires, Argentina
FIESA is an international meeting of Institutions of Higher Education that gathers representatives from around the world. The fair will feature five central conferences per each strategic value of the event: synergy, learning, innovation, diversity, and sustainability. There will be more than 20 seminars, talks and workshops with experts as well as networking spaces, poster sessions and videos of international experiences. Faubai 2020 Conference, "Global Learning, Global Citizens", 25-29 April 2020, Minas Gerais, Brazil
Themed "Global Learning, Global Citizens", Faubai 2020 will explore strategies for advancing global education, developing global awareness and perspective, and an attitude of global engagement. The conference will bring together specialists on internationalization of higher education, Vice-Presidents, SIOs, Heads of International Offices from Brazil and abroad and those interested in internationalization of HE. The 3rd Open Science Forum of Latin America and the Caribbean - CILAC Forum 2020, “Science that includes”, 21-23 September 2020, Buenos Aires, Argentina
The CILAC Forum is the largest event of scientific knowledge at the regional level, which takes place every two years in different cities, with the aim of promoting sustainable communities through science, technology and innovation. Information on the calls for presentation of thematic sessions, parallel events, and pre-registration is coming soon to the event website. Stay tuned!

The state of Food and Agriculture:Moving Forward on Food Loss and Reduction- 2019 report
This report investigates the issue of food loss and waste through a critical and pragmatic lens aimed at determining the most appropriate next steps. Among others, it investigates the business and economic cases of food loss/wastage reduction. Link to report

Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR) 2019: The future is now - Science for Achieving Sustainable Development
GSDR 2019 depicts humanity at a crossroads. It brings together scientific evidence from around the world to illuminate how action taken immediately – or not taken – will determine the existence of humanity, stressing the need to become more strategic about multiplying the effects of actions. Africa Agriculture Status Report 2019, "The Hidden Middle: Bringing Africa’s SMEs into the Light"
The report looks at the overlooked cohort of essential but unrecognized workers and enterprises' potential role in the transformation of African agriculture and the continent’s long-awaited green revolution. Link to report

Bridging Existing and New Approaches for the Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation Between Finland and Africa
