Message from the Principal

Dear Emerson Families,

As we move into October, we look forward to many fun activities.  This Friday, October 18 students will be treated to a performance of Macbeth by the San Francisco Shakespeare Company.  Sunday, October 20, we invite all Emerson families to participate in the Walk-A-Thon, from 10 am to 2 pm.  This promises to be an amazing event, that will give everyone an opportunity to connect and show support for our school.

Halloween is quickly approaching and you may be deciding what your student’s costume will be.  We ask that you steer clear of costumes that are very scary, bloody and we do not tolerate weapons of any kind.  As in years past, students, staff and parents are invited to participate in the annual parade. We will meet on the blacktop after recess at 12:50 pm, and then walk through the community to show off our spirit. The staff has voted on our secret theme for the year, and we are busy preparing for the excitement.

The Committee Training Meeting is tonight, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Longfellow Middle School.  Superintendent Stephens will give a special address regarding the district’s budget.  We will also hold a School Site Council mini-meeting during this time.  All are welcome to attend. RSVP for food and Child Care at: tinyurl.com/BUSD2019

This fall, on Thursday evenings, we are enjoying an empowering Equity Circle, led by Ms. Pamela Harrison-Small, and supported by the PTA.  After meeting for two sessions, we have already formed a team of school staff and parents who are committed to learning through our stories, while creating meaningful change to benefit all students.

A special thank you to the many volunteers who make Emerson a better place.  Whether you bring coffee on Fridays, helped with picture day, or are a Room Parent, you make a positive difference, and we appreciate you..

Sincerely,
Jana Holmes, Principal

Come to the October 30th PTA Meeting Association Meeting: Navigating Technology Use at School and at Home -- Digital Citizenship, Academics, Social Media, and Gaming.

Please join us on 10/30/2019 for a presentation and discussion about navigating technology and social media with your kids!  The evening will be led by Eric Silverberg, one of the technology experts from Berkeley Unified School District.  Eric will discuss technology use in elementary school, the district's digital citizenship focus, and the use of technology in academics.  He will then lead a discussion and Q&A on balancing media use, social media, and gaming at home.  There will be plenty of time for questions and conversation.  Dinner will be served at 6:00pm, the presentation will start at 6:30pm and end around 7:45pm.  Following the presentation there will be a brief PTA Association and Board meeting (please stay if you can!).  Childcare will be provided.  RSVP to come.

The Emerson Walkathon and Fall Carnival! Is THIS SUNDAY, October 20th!

We are excited to remind you of a few changes to this year's event:

1. While walkers can walk at any point between 10am and 2pm, Ms. Holmes will start the kids off at 10am on the dot.

2. We will have a variety of food for you to purchase on the day: baked goods and coffee from 9am-12pm and offerings from our International Food Fair from 12-2pm.

3. This year we will be using tickets as currency instead of cash. You can purchase tickets from the cashier by the registration table on the day.

4. This is a fairly large undertaking and we will need lots of volunteers on the day! Sign up for a volunteer slot (or two!) here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090a4aafa92ca2f49-halloween

Equity Corner: Recommended Reading for Parents

For the last Equity Corner, we talked about books to read with your kids about race. Now we would like to give some recommendations  — one a book and the other online or as a podcast — for parents:

So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo
Racism is a difficult subject to talk about. How do you tell your roommate her jokes are racist? Why did your sister-in-law take umbrage when you asked to touch her hair--and how do you make it right? How do you explain white privilege to your white, privileged friend? Ijeoma Oluo guides readers of all races . . . in an attempt to make the seemingly impossible possible: honest conversations about race and racism, and how they infect almost every aspect of American life.

 The 1619 Project
The 1619 project observes the 400th anniversary of American slavery. It aims to reframe the country’s history, understanding 1619 as our true founding, and placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of the story we tell ourselves about who we are.

Ms. Zoe still needs volunteers to shelve books on Wednesdays

Do you have 20-30 minutes right after drop off on Wednesday mornings? Emerson has a vibrant reading community and lots of readers means lots of books that need to go back on shelves for new readers!  Ms. Zoe is looking for a volunteer or two to shelve books for 20-30 min. immediately after drop off on Wednesdays.  Email Ms. Zoe at zoewilliams@berkeley.net or just come!
Run the BioFreeze Berkeley Half Marathon and Help Berkeley Schools!

Sign up for the Family 1K:
 https://berkeleyhalfmarathon.com/the-races/family-1k/

The Family 1k is a great way to get the whole family across the finish line! Walk or run together on Saturday. Each participant will receive a commemorative bib, a pin, and post-run snacks and drinks. This is an all-ages run, so get everyone in your family involved and help support the Berkeley Public Schools. A portion of registration proceeds will be donated to the Berkeley Public Schools Fund.
THIS Friday, October 18 is Emerson Spirit Day!

The theme is

Crazy Hair & Hat Day
Dia de los Muertos at Emerson

Emerson will be celebrating Dia de los Muertos, on Friday, November 1 in the library. In the weeks leading up to Dia de los Muertos, Ms. Zoe will be reading books about the holiday. Students, staff and families are invited to bring pictures and/or mementos of a loved one to put on the ofrenda.

We will need families to help construct the ofrenda in the library on Friday October 18 after drop off - email Ms. Zoe (zoewilliams@berkeley.net) or just show up to help!
Walkathon Bakers Needed!

Did you know that the bake sale itself raised over $500 at last year's Walkathon? If you'd like to make this year's bake sale a success, please bring a breakfast baked treat to the Walkathon; the bake sale will run from 9am-12pm. If you have any questions, or want to help out on the day, email Erin Tsuchimoto (eetsuch@yahoo.com).
Totally Terrifying Toy Swap Shop

For the first time, the Walkathon will feature a premium toy shop where walkers can pick out wonderful, new-to-you gifts. But we need your help to make it happen! Start looking around for your highly desirable gently used books and toys that may be happier in a new home! Please bring only items that are clean, in good condition, and appropriate for Emerson-aged students K to 5th. No violent or war toys and no dumping! All un”sold” toys will be further donated/re-homed. Drop off in the front office behind Gabby’s desk any time before the Walkathon.
The Return of Respook, Rewear, Rescare

While you are poking around your closets and other storage areas, be sure to also set aside your old-to-you costumes for our annual costume recycling program. Let's go GREEN for Halloween! Put to EEK-o-friendly use any hats, masks, capes, and wigs collecting dust in your closets in our annual costume swap. Take what you want, and give any clean and easily reusable dress-up goods to our big green and ghosty Costume Recycling box. The boo-tiful costumes will be at the Walkathon and outside Ms. Jeannie’s room. We’ll help your costumes find new bones… er… homes that will love them! You don’t have to donate anything to get a “new to you” costume. Any gear not adopted by Emerson families will be further donated.
Friday Morning Bakers Needed

Please join the Friday morning bakers this year! If you enjoy occasionally baking (Sweet or savory, simple or fancy!) and would like to bring our Emerson caregiver community together to enjoy coffee, conversation and a morning bite please contact Christine at 510-545-6349 or Christinecoxjude@gmail.com.
