Dear water professional,
A by-product of the massive migration from rural to urban areas in the past decades has been the sprawling city, this huge, mostly unplanned, and mainly residential development that covers increasing areas of land around city cores, or as the author of 'Architecture of Failure', Douglas Murphy, puts it, "suburbia on steroids".
One of the greatest challenges of this gift or forfeit of modern urbanism is the delivery of water and sanitation services. The increase of urban population asks for a continuous expansion of water and wastewater networks. Conventional centralised networks are very cost-intensive and if not well maintained, leakages lead to loss of valuable resources, intermittent water supply or low revenue for utilities to implement improvements. In emerging economies, the unplanned and often informal character of these settlements adds an additional challenge to provide safe services to these peri-urban areas.
Come explore different approaches and initiatives that are proving successful in bridging the gap to 2030 at the IWA Water and Development Congress & Exhibition, 1-5 December 2019, Colombo, Sri Lanka.
