Office of Research Career Development Opportunities

The Office of Research Career Development is sponsoring a monthly seminar series on Scientific Writing.  The purpose of this series is to help faculty, fellows and postdocs write clear, well-organized scientific papers.  These seminars are scheduled on Thursdays from 9:00 – 10:00am at the SMC Campus Center, Room 351. Registration is available for the next 2 sessions:

Planning Your Publication
Thursday, October 24 ● 9:00-10:00am ●
621 W. Lombard Street, SMC Campus Center, Room 351

This session will focus on the publication planning process and provide tips for getting published in an academic journal.

Topics include:

  • Defining your research question
  • Choosing an appropriate journal
  • Strategies for effective organization and writing

Speaker: Marey Shriver, PhD, Director, Office of Research Career Development, UMSOM

Registration required online at: http://registrationrcdp.eventbrite.com

Ethical Considerations in Authorship

(including how to determine authorship)

Thursday, November 14 ● 9:00-10:00am ● 621 W. Lombard Street, SMC Campus Center, Room 351

Being published in a peer-reviewed journal is a crucial aspect of a researcher’s career and a common metric by which productivity is gauged.  Thus, as a form of ‘currency’, disputes and conflicts of interest involving authorship frequently occur, requiring careful consideration of the scientific community standards by which individuals should be identified as an author.  This session will discuss modern trends in authorship and ethical considerations when determining authorship.

Speaker: Adam Puche, PhD, Professor, Department Anatomy & Neurobiology, UMSOM

Registration required online at: http://registrationrcdp.eventbrite.com

Group Dialogue

Each semester the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life (DFSL) coordinates the Ten Man Plan and the Ten Woman Plan. This is a 9 week facilitated group dialogue that offers fraternity and sorority members the opportunity to examine how they can intervene to prevent sexual assault and other interpersonal violence, as well as how to support individuals who may be victims. Topics covered include bystander intervention, healthy/unhealthy relationships, social norms, gender stereotypes, rape culture, and much more! The program description can be found here.

Each semester we have many Chapters that are interested in participating, and are always in need of facilitators. If you are interested in being a facilitator or have any questions, please contact Olivia Kachingwe, the DFSL Sexual Assault Prevention Coordinator at dfsl.sap@gmail.com.

2019 National Postdoctoral Survey

Dear Postdocs,
Are you interested in winning a travel award, and in sharing your experiences as a postdoc to a large national postdoc survey?  All responses are anonymous, and participants have a chance to enter a drawing for a $200 travel award to a scientific meeting!
The 2019 National Postdoc Survey was conceived and developed by postdocs to benefit all members of the postdoctoral community, and is a follow-up to our very successful 2016 National Postdoc Survey.  Since 2016, changes in postdoc policies have been implemented, including an increase in the postdoctoral salary levels set by NIH.  An updated survey is needed now in order to capture the current experiences of postdoc fellows and scholars, and inform and equip those who advocate for policy on behalf of postdocs.
Survey link: https://redcap.uchicago.edu/surveys/?s=KY8RE88RRR
Thank you very much for your participation, and please forward this important survey to your postdoc colleagues!

Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning

UMD-CIRTL [Center for the Integration of Research Teaching and Learning] is an important resource funded by the Graduate School, open to all UM graduate students, postdocs, and faculty. UMD-CIRTL is part of a national network of nearly 40 universities whose mission is to improve higher education by providing community and resources for the professional development of future academics. UMD-CIRTL’s philosophy is that teaching, like research, is a scholarly activity built on three principles; Teaching-as-Research (TAR): using research to inform teaching and teaching to advance research, Learning Communities: bringing people together for shared learning, discovery, and generation of knowledge, and Learning-Through-Diversity: capitalizing on the rich array of experiences, backgrounds, and skills among students and faculty to enhance the learning of all. UMD-CIRTL works closely with, PROMISE: Maryland’s Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) grant to increase the number of minority students receiving doctoral degrees and entering the STEM professoriate.

For more information, follow this link or contact the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs or go to the CIRTL Network and register. This will give you free access to professional development courses, seminars and workshop as well as a listing of current employment opportunities.
