Fireworks
Due to various circumstances, we have had to cancel the Fireworks event, at the club.     We apologise, but members are still welcome to use the club car park and then walk down to Send Green to watch the fireworks display put on by the Scouts on 2nd November.

However we will still be holding the Annual Dinner and Prizegiving

on Saturday 23rd November.   Of particular interest to those who have won trophies over the last year, but a convivial night out for all the sailing club family.  This year at Hoebridge Golf Club (just up the road a bit).   Details on the attached poster.  Email Ali on alisonroche@btinternet.com to book (with your menu choices), or if you would like more information.

Supporting the Jubilee Sailing Trust

We had another fun and very successful quiz in the clubhouse on Saturday 19th October.
70 people were there to enjoy the tasty posh ploughmans which Ali Roche had prepared, and served by Sue and Andrew.
The raffle proceeds of £260 went to the Jubilee Sailing Trust,
https://jst.org.uk/  who's mission is "to give people of mixed abilities and circumstances the freedom to explore their ability, potential and place in the world through inclusive adventures at sea."

Massive thanks to Jenny for preparing and running the quiz so smoothly, supported by Peter collating the numbers, and to John & Brenda Panting for keeping us 'hydrated', as well as Ali, Sue and Andrew in the galley.

Keeping the Club Shipshape - Work Party 3rd November

Twice a year everyone gets together to work hard and enjoy a fabulous free lunch.  We have had a very busy summer season, so there is lots of stuff to do around the clubhouse and boat park.  Many hands make light work and it is a great way to meet members of the club and give something back to the club that is always there for you.   Our facilities are the envy of many other clubs, so if you can help to keep them spick and span and ready for the winter, please put the date in your diary.

Safety Boat Jetty

In the meantime our thanks to Messrs Baple, Bennett, Mills and Panting who have repaired the right hand side of the safety boat pontoon, but please do not use it yet, as it needs another seven days for the submerged concrete to set.

Chairs

The observant amongst you will have noticed that quite a lot of the old tub chairs have now been taken away and rehomed.  The remainder of those chairs will now be removed to the training shed so PLEASE PLEASE do not remove any chairs from the clubhouse, as we will shortly be putting out our lovely new ones, but do help yourself from the shed.

AGM - Thursday 21st November - 8.00 pm at the Club

Papercourt is your club, so please take this opportunity to come along and elect the new committee members, hear what's been going on and what's planned, and of course the bar will be open!

Club Championships and Winter Sailing Programme

Our end of Season Finale is the Club Championships on Sunday 27th October.  This is a day for everyone, young and not so young, to go out on the water.  We have two different trophies to sail for - The Lawes Trophy for anyone who has never won a Club Trophy (excluding 2019 season) and the Champion of Champions for everyone else.

We then move onto the Winter Sailing Programme starting on 11th November, and you can see what's in it by clicking the button below.   A reminder that for the duration of the Winter programme sailors must wear either a full wetsuit or a dry suit on the water.

We held our Solo Open last Sunday 13th, with 10 visitors swelling the entries to 24 boats.
It was a windy day, with many capsizes on the way to the start line and during the close racing.
Well done to James Boyce for a convincing win, Fraser 3rd and Andrew 6th.

Riley The Guide Dog in Training

Our youth section raised enough money with their sponsored sail, and some generous donations last year to sponsor two guide dog puppies through their training.    This is Riley just last week.
Alex Hovden - Papercourt Disabled Sailor - Plea for Help

Alex is an amazing Sailor who started learning to sail at Papercourt some years ago, and became a European Champion, narrowly missing the GB Paralympic team.   Now Alex needs some help to continue his sailing journey:

Sailing helpers needed to assist Alex, a Challenger sailor with physical disabilities, compete at national sailing events.

Alex works full time in London and lives near Woking in Surrey and is keen to take part in the following Selden Sail Juice winter series events;
Draycote Dash 23/24th November 2019,
Grafham Grand Prix 29th December 2019
Tiger trophy at Rutland 1/2 February 2020
Oxford Blue 15th February 2020
As well as the Challenger events 2020.

Knowledge, understanding and enthusiasm for boats, and sailing in all weather conditions would be useful.  A good sense of humour is especially welcome.
Needs to be able to help with the driving (VW transporter) and tow the boat.
Needs to rig and set up challenger, instruction will be given.
Needs to help launch and retrieve challengers with a small team of other helpers.

Basic accommodation will be provided when away from home.

For further information please call Alex on 07540 659188 evenings and weekends only

For Information - Gas Works in Newark Lane, Ripley

We have received the following information:
  • We will begin our project on Newark Lane on Monday 28 October for approximately one week
  • To ensure everyone’s safety we need to temporarily close Newark Lane at its junction with High Street for approximately 50m
  • A signed diversion will be in place for motorists via High Street, Portsmouth Road, Send Marsh Road, Polesden Lane and Newark Lane, and vice versa
  • Access for residents will be maintained
There will also be some works in a private road off Newark Lane for the following three weeks.

Our engineers will be working Monday – Friday between 8am and 4pm and if required Saturday and Sunday between 8am and 2pm.

We understand that people can get frustrated by roadworks. However, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years. This means that when the work is complete, Ripley residents and businesses will continue to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.

You can find more information about this project and other works in your area, at Roadworks.orghere: https://one.network/?114659823
