Marathon Road Closures - October 20
The 2019 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon takes place this Sunday, October 20.  Part of the route goes through Harbord Village. In particular, Harbord St between St George and Bathurst will be closed to traffic from 8 to 10.15 am.  (View the entire route on the interactive map here.  Click on “Show closures” and slide the time bar underneath to see all the road closures and re-openings.)

To accommodate this closure, several one-way streets in the neighbourhood will become temporarily two-way to facilitate alternative access.  However, as Boys of Major and James Hale lanes are dead ends, access will be affected while the marathon passes through. For those who will be affected by this closure, here is info from the organizers, via Mike Layton’s office:

Access to and from Boys of Major and James Hale Lanes
  • Organizers will have barricades, marshals & cones in place
  • From 8 to 10 am marshals will facilitate cars exiting these lanes onto Harbord and going to Major or Lippincott, which will be converted to two-way streets to let drivers get off Harbord
  • They would strongly encourage these residents to leave their homes before 8 am or after 10 am for an easier exit.
  • Vehicles will not be able to cross Harbord and get back into those two lanes until after 10am.
  • Race starts from downtown at 8:45am so vehicles can leave easily from 8.00 to 8.30 am.  The last participant should be through this area by approximately 9.45 am.
They added:
The marathon couldn't go through Bloor this year due to the construction (significant injury potential due to rough road surfaces and raised manhole covers), but the plan is to have it return to that alignment in future years once the construction is complete.

If you have trouble getting out of the lanes you can call the Event Operation Centre Hotline at 1-855-688-6734 – this will be operational from 4am-4pm on Sunday, Oct. 20th.

Pumpkin Fest Needs You! - November 1
The HVRA Pumpkin Festival features nearly six blocks of artfully carved lighted jack-o-lanterns gathered from the porches of Harbord Village.  Organizers are looking for volunteers to round up pumpkins on the afternoon of November 1 (between roughly 1 and 4 pm) and deliver them to tables on Harbord.  Those with cars are especially needed.  Contact James Murdoch if you can help.

And since it’s important to keep those pumpkins lit during the night, Pumpkin Candle Lighters are also needed. Finally, the more helpers we have at the end of the night, the faster the cleanup can happen. If you have an hour or two between 6 and 8.30 pm for either of these tasks, please get in touch with Lena Mortensen.
