Mason Professors Lead Cancer Trials

The trials extend patients' lives; generate data for other cancer researchers to test their hypotheses

George Mason University researchers Emanuel "Chip" Petricoin and Mariaelena Pierobon are leading personalized breast cancer trials that involve taking a biopsy from the patient’s tumor and analyzing its DNA, transcripts, proteins and protein activity.

This approach, called “multi-omics,” combines molecular data and provides a more complete picture of how the tumor cells are operating. Treatment can then be recommended based on the characteristics of an individual’s tumor, rather than a “one-size-fits-all” approach. This improves the effectiveness of treatment, and minimizes the negative side effects of treatment.

Pierobon’s research is complemented by several other Mason researchers working on breast cancer. “They are reaching across disciplines every day to make the connections that could turn the tide in the fight against breast cancer,” said Amy Adams, executive director of Mason’s Institute for Biohealth Innovation.

Potential new application for CAPMM’s Nanotrap may help diagnose concussions

Mason researchers Emanuel “Chip” Petricoin and Shane Caswell are working across disciplines to develop a test to diagnose a concussion by using saliva collected from an athlete after a hard impact. Such a test could be used on the athletic field and on the battlefield after members of the military are exposed to a blast.

Measurable thresholds of protein biomarkers in the saliva of the potentially concussed could quickly diagnose a concussion, and also provide a quantifiable indication that a person is ready to get back on the playing field or return to military duty.
