The weekend of awesome music has arrived. David Smith and many members of the congregation will be singing, playing, and singing some more. Even if you haven't been able to sign up to sing, you should definitely NOT miss the opportunity to come to worship and experience the music.

Community Food Share on Monday
|
|
First U is privileged each month to offer food to neighbors who do not have enough. You are invited to volunteer to help this Monday, October 21.
The Community Food Share Pantry could use help with set up, helping guests shop, helping with clean-up, or with other needed tasks.
The Pantry serves 3:30 - 5:30 pm, but it is helpful if volunteers arrive by 2:00 pm.
For more info about Community Food Share, contact Amy Grant, amyinprovidence@yahoo.com. To volunteer, contact Judy Ortman, judyortman@gmail.com.

Spirit in Life group begins October 23
All are invited to attend an introductory Spirit in Life meeting on Wednesday, October 23 at 1:30, at the church. This group is dedicated to the exploration of our spirituality by sharing in the practice of deep listening and careful speech, and by offering an opportunity to reflect on times and events which heighten our sense of the spirit within us. We consider what we think it means to be human as we live our relationships with our families, our community, and in society.
If you would like more information, or are interested in joining, contact Rick Richards, rickarichards@gmail.com Pat Gifford, pgiffordmd@gmail.com or Ellie Sardoni crescenzio4@gmail.com.

Why join the choir?
by Beth Armstrong, Sabbatical Music Director
|
|
I heard recently about a church choir director who, when asked by a long-time congregant if he could join the choir the first of January, told him, "No - wait until next September." Leaving aside all the red flags this incident raised for me as a choral director, it made me reflect on the purpose and mission of a church choir.
A membership committee member, upon meeting a new member of a church, was heard to suggest, "It's a large church. Best to find a small group within it and put your focus there." In other words, in some way, join a small group ministry. The key word being ministry.
What is a church choir if not a small group ministry? The choir contributes a great deal to a worship service, but they also derive a kind of deep satisfaction that is unique to them. They get out of it more than they give. For me, music is worship; the beauty of music is a manifestation of the Holy. To sing in a choir is to pray twice. And for me, this fall, it has been a joy to help facilitate this particular small group ministry.
