Welcome to 3 Bullet Thursday!

Each week I'll send you the three most compelling ideas, facts, studies and/or products related to nutrition, health and wellness that I have to share.

Who wants to slow down the mental and physical effects that aging has been known to impart on us - in healthy, natural ways?

Here's a safe biohacking angle to consider:
It's all about the telomeres.

Telomeres are the caps at the end of DNA strands that protect the strand and separate one chromosome from another.
Telomeres ensure that none of your DNA gets lost or messed up during each cell division.
Yet every time a cell divides, some of the telomere wears off in the process. Once the telomere is too short, the chromosome can no longer replicate. Once it can no longer replicate, the cell dies.
Telomeres are like a clock that regulates the amount of times an individual cell can divide. This means they can only divide a certain amount of times.
The more they divide, the older they get. The older your cells, the more you tangibly age.

If you can increase the production of telomerase, the enzyme that generates telomeres in your body, you can essentially slow down aging and protect yourself from the various diseases and ailments that lead to death as you age. Increasing its production will stop your telomeres from shrinking after cell division and extend your lifespan in the process.

You can essentially make a mortal cell into an immortal cell!

How do we help our bodies make more telomerase?

  • Vitamin D
In a study from the London school of medicine that spanned about five years, over 2,000 women were tested with vitamin D concentrations. It was found that women who had higher concentrations of Vitamin D over the span of 5 years had longer telomeres than the women who used a smaller concentration of Vitamin D.

I get a lot of questions about Vitamin D, especially from my peeps in the northeast. Vitamin D in its best form, is from the sun, of course, so the months of the year he is out and you can let your skin be exposed to pull in his amazing nourishment - do!
20 minutes a day is perfect, but if you only have 5, take it.

With Fall upon us and Winter coming, these opportunities are not as abundant. During these months, take a good supplement. The quality of nourishment is not as "nature perfect" as the sun, but it's something, and your body will use it well.

I've just begun learning a bit about a powerful combination of Vitamin D + Vitamin K2 and how these two essential nutrients complement and increase activation of the properties in one another.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Nobel Prize winner Elizabeth Blackburn published a study in the journal of American Medical Association that measured the lengths of telomeres on over 600 patients with coronary artery disease. After five years of taking Omega-3 fatty acids, the research found that patients would experience a much slower rate of telomere shortening when taking the omega supplements.

Sufficient intake of O-3's is essential for so many functions of the body: one big one is the proper transmission of nerve signals, without which can leave us feeling depressed or anxious. ie: O-3's for brain health!

Seeds and nuts are a fantastic plant based source of O-3s: hemp, flax and pumpkin seeds as well as walnuts are at the top of the list.
I also highly recommend taking a Chlorella supplement to be sure you're getting plenty of O-3s - and so much more.
Here is a good bit about this powerful superfood from a previous 3BT.
  • Meditation (of course!)

A study in Howard University Medical center researched 40 men and women who have hypertension. Twenty of the participants were assigned to learn the Transcendental Meditation technique (this is the technique many of you know I "religiously" practice and hold very near and dear to my heart, and which has been proven repeatedly to reduce stress and promote better overall health) and the other twenty subjects were assigned to take a part in an extensive health education/reformation course.

The results of the study showed that both the Transcendental Meditation technique group and the lifestyle changes group had stimulated the two genes that produce telomerase as well as reduce blood pressure.
So in case you needed another reason to start meditating regularly or become more regular with your practice: regular meditation changes us at a DNA level and extends our lives.

As a reminder: Embrace the uncertainty of life. Everything is working out best case scenario.
