FALL AT THE MINGEI: WHAT’S ON
EXHIBITIONS, WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS

There’s something for everyone at Mingei.

October 21, 2019 San Diego, CA - Mingei International Museum continues to pop up around the region, collaborating with local organizations to provide original exhibitions, hands-on workshops and events. The Museum recently opened a brand-new show of contemporary art and craft: METAMORPHOSIS: Allied Craftsmen 2019, now on view at City Gallery at San Diego City College. This juried exhibition features work by members of the Allied Craftsmen of San Diego, the seminal membership-based arts collective originated in San Diego in 1946. METAMORPHOSIS offers visitors the opportunity to discover current work made by local artists from a variety of backgrounds in the categories of fiber, glass, metal, wood, ceramics, furniture, jewelry and mixed media. In addition to the exhibition, there will also be a lunchtime lecture, workshops and demonstrations with artists from Allied Craftsmen of San Diego. This exhibition will be on view through December 5, 2019.

Mingei International Museum has also collaborated with Athenaeum Art Center (AAC) by contributing to a new exhibition at Bread & Salt. Now on view at AAC, selections of Mexican Folk Art from the Museum’s permanent collection includes works emblematic of Mexican popular culture such as Day of the Dead imagery, articulated paper mache dolls, devils, mermaids and more. Mingei objects complement and contrast with other artwork by two Tijuana artists, Cesar Vazquez and Mike Jimenez. This show will be on view through December 12, 2019.

Throughout the fall Mingei International Museum will offer events and hands-on workshops centered around the exhibition METAMORPHOSIS and the Mexican Folk Art installation. Project Runway winner, Ashley Nell Tipton, will teach participants how to create her Frida-Kahlo-inspired signature flower pieces, along with the list full list of events below.
