Carried Bells — installation view of daily walk video at Hosek Contemporary.
Carried Bells is a process-based work, in which sounds and images of a series of ringing bells are recorded in the city of Berlin. These recordings are then carried on foot, in a repeating daily task, to a central installation which grows by one bell each day over the course of the presentation of the work.
This daily task has been ongoing since 5. October, and will conclude on 24. October, with the carrying of the twentieth and final bell from the Marienkirche in Alexanderplatz. The following day, Friday, 25. October, there will be a finissage event to present the outcome of the completed process.
Carried Bells harvests traces from the sounds of the city — exploring acoustic phenomena, social history, and the potential of public space — and assembles an accumulating outcome that allows these individual recordings to combine and overlap in unpredictable ways. The work aims to bring the sounds of the bells of the city out of the backgrounds of our attention, to recontextualise them, and to re-imagine them.
