School Edition

News and Updates from MESA

From the Principal's Desk

Greetings MESA Families!  It is hard to believe that we are already coming to the end of Week 9.  This means that scholars who have perfect attendance have been in school already for 42 days!  Congratulations to those scholars and their parent and support network for recognizing the value in your scholars education.  42 full days of school translates into 344 hours of academic rigorous instruction, character building, and learning accountability and responsibility.  You are setting the foundation for your future.

Fall intersession is from October 21st through October 25th.  Scholars are encouraged to continue reading for a minimum of 30 minutes per day.  Some teachers will be sending home academic intervention information that will allow scholars to remain academically charged through the break.

A few updates:  The MESA Family handbook (available online at theenviornmentalschool.org) will be updated with an addendum to the discipline section related to profanity and inappropriate language.  Teachers and administrators have reported higher than usual incidences where scholars have received redirection for using profanity or other inappropriate communications while in school.  It is important that we continue to create, promote, and protect a first class learning environment. Parents/ Guardians are asked to proactively speak with your scholars about this reminding them that violations related are suspendible offenses.

When scholars return from break we will be working hard to gear up for winter STAR testing.  Please make sure that scholars are well rested and ready to return to school on October 28, 2019.  Scholars should arrive to school on time at 8:30a.m. and remain in school for the full day, school ends at 3:30p.m.  Parents when you pick scholars up early from school it disrupts the learning in the classrooms; teachers have to field calls from the office, stop instructions to get your scholar ready for dismissal, and provide them with their homework for that day.  Not only does this hurt your scholar it also hurts our educational programming. Please do not pick scholars up from school early unless they are sick, have appointments (medical), or its a rare emergency. This adversely impacts their attendance. Scholars who leave more than 15 minutes early are considered tardy (the same as arriving late) and do not qualify for perfect attendance including the monthly incentives.  Above all, they miss valuable learning time. PLEASE make sure scholars are in school all day. It will pay off in their academic performance, on their standardized testing, and through their educational journey (including high school and college). I wish you all a safe fall break and look forward to seeing you back on Monday, October 28, 2019.

Educationally,

Michael Morgan

Principal.

Progress Reports

Progress reports are essential forms of documentation and communication with our families because they include student comments for each core subject area that states whether or not  each scholar is meeting grade level expectations. The comments on the Progress Reports accurately reflect each scholar’s academic performance on formative and summative assessments related to standards. Progress Reports will be sent home on Tuesday, October 15th.

Scholar Daily Academic Planner

A student planner an academic planner was given to every middle school scholar on Monday, September 16th to create organization and better communication. With the planner being a part of the classroom experience, your scholar is more likely to keep track of their assignments, set personal goals, and enhance communication between teacher, scholar and parent.

Help MESA Fundraise

MESA has a fundraising goal of $40,000.00 this year. Our first pizza sale fundraiser was a success! There will be a winter and a spring concert along with other opportunities to support our school.  If you want to make a donation to the school or vol with a fundraiser see Dean Cobb for more details.

  •  Make sure your child has a quiet, well-lit place to do homework.

  • Avoid having your child do homework with the television on or in places with other distractions, such as people coming and going.

  • Make sure the materials your child needs, such as paper, pencils and a dictionary, are available. Ask your child if special materials will be needed for some projects and get them in advance.

  • Help your child with time management.

  • Establish a set time each day for doing homework. Don‘t let your child leave homework until just before bedtime. Think about using a weekend morning or afternoon for working on big projects, especially if the project involves getting together with classmates.

  • Tell your child how important school is. The attitude you express about homework will be the attitude your child acquires.

  • When your child does homework, you do homework.

  • Show your child that the skills they are learning are related to things you do as an adult. If your child is reading, you read too. If your child is doing math, balance your checkbook.
