READ to Increase Vocabulary

A key predictor of school success or failure is a child’s vocabulary. Why? Most instruction for a child’s first 4 years of school is oral. Thus, the child who has the largest vocabulary will understand the most, while the child with the smallest vocabulary will grasp the least.

SOLUTION: Children who are read to the most or read the most from a variety of books will have more background knowledge - allowing them to understand more of what the teacher or textbook is teaching. Children read at one level, and listen at a higher level. So yes, read books to your kids at a higher level to introduce them to new words and ideas - and to accelerate their reading/learning process.

It is also is especially important to read aloud non-fiction (facts), in addition to fiction (stories). Why? Because non-fiction (think STEM titles) will introduce a wider variety of vocabulary words and give more background knowledge to better help your child in school.

Reading non-fiction helps young children just starting school... on up to your high school students. Continue reading aloud to your older kids, too!
