Bird Week: Make every bird count!

Can you spare half an hour for science? Whether your 'yard' is a suburban backyard, the local park, the beach or even the main street of town, you can do your bit to help in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count during Bird Week from 21 - 27 October. Be a citizen scientist and discover your local wildlife while enjoying the great outdoors. Register here

Wicking garden bed demonstrations

Limited places are still available at our wicking bed demonstrations. Learn how your plants can thrive with just a fraction of the water they would otherwise use.
Jeremy Prentice from Very Edible Gardens will demonstrate how to create a wicking bed in an existing raised garden bed at two of our Community Gardens in Kingston from 10.30am - 12pm on Saturday 16 November at Chelsea Heights Community Garden and Saturday 23  November at Melaleuca Community Garden.

'Living the Better Life' Workshop Wrap-up

In August, we co-hosted free workshops at Cheltenham, Clarinda and Parkdale on how to live  a life with a smaller environmental footprint.  Facilitated by CERES, these workshops gave practical tips on the decisions you can make to introduce eco-living to your life. Participants discussed the simple ideas we can all implement to reduce our impact on the environment. As part of the session, participants learnt how to make reusable beeswax wraps out of cotton fabric and wax.

It was great to see the community connections being made during the making of the wraps! The wraps were taken home to be used to cover and wrap food, reducing the need to use plastic film. With such strong interest in the sessions, we hope to run these again during 2020.

Don't forget to follow us on Facebook to stay up to date with upcoming events and workshops.

Have your say on our workshops for 2020

Planning is underway for the range of FREE events and workshops Council could offer for next year. Some of the proposed ideas include:

  • a screening of the film 2040 in February
  • a bus trip to CERES in Brunswick
  • an additional  presentation of the popular 'Living the Better Life - for the Environment and You'
  • composting and other waste education reduction/management workshops

We value your input to shape the variety of workshops we can deliver. To give your suggestions please contact us at ourplace@kingston.vic.gov.au.
