Meet the 2019 UNESCO-Japan Prize winners



This year, the UNESCO-Japan Prize is rewarding the Camphill Community Trust in Botswana, the Sustainable Amazon Foundation in Brazil, and the City of Hamburg in Germany.

Each of the three laureates will receive an award of US $50,000 during a ceremony taking place at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France on 15 November.

Building teachers' capacity in Southern Africa


Sustainability starts with teachers. This is the moto of the UNESCO Capacity Building Programme for Teachers on Education for Sustainable Development, an initiative started in January 2019 and targeting teacher educators across 11 Southern African countries. Transformative, change-oriented learning is at the heart of this initiative, which includes innovations related to curriculum, pedagogy and whole-institution approaches.

Developing sustainability skills for Guatemalan teachers




In Guatemala, the graduation project is an important part of youth’s secondary education. Their objective is to serve the community and contribute to solving problems that students have identified in their community or school. In 2019, the Guatemalan Ministry of Education proposed the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as the thematic basis of the graduation project. UNESCO organized a series of SDG-related workshops for teachers supervising graduation projects.
