Advocacy for the Fire Watchtower began in earnest in 2001 when Preservation Architect Angel Ayon, then a student at Columbia School of Architecture chose to do his thesis project on the tower.
In 2013 the Fire Watchtower Steering Committee was formed. The very first meeting took place at the NYPL on West 124th Street, in attendance Angel Ayon, Syderia Asberry-Chresfield, Laurent Delly, Kathleen Hulser and Connie Lee. Many others, too many to name, joined the steering committee over the next few months.
In 2015 the Fire Watchtower was dismantled in the first phase of the restoration project.
In 2019 with gratitude to Commissioner Mitchell Silver and NYC Parks Capital Division as a community we celebrate the architectural history of the Fire Watchtower and the cultural significance of the watchtower site known as the Acropolis in Marcus Garvey Park.
