This week
On the podcast, we're talking about scammers at the very top of government, in the U.S. and in Canada, and people with the courage to stand up to them.

I'm reading
Dispatches from the largest immigration detention infrastructure in the world. Months after ICE raids, a small Mississippi town is still reeling. "We are now standing with our chests bare to face the Turkish knives." Native Americans want to run their own health care system. A woman sought medical care at an emergency room and was abused by the doctor instead—she's not the only one. Why women choose not to talk about the abuse and harassment they endure. Bresha Meadows thought you'd understand. A mother's survival and her son's devotion. Online, no one knows you're poor. A phone call between Virgil Abloh and Arthur Jafa. Men should consider leaning out. How masculinity is changing. I am excited to read Andrea Long Chu's book. Awards season is apparently not ready for they/them pronouns. The Curb Cut Effect, and what ignoring the disabled community costs Hollywood. What made the screechy bleep-bloop sound of dial-up internet. The healing power of a dinner party. Alas, "prosecco and pink peppercorn flavour" Pringles are out of my reach.

Plus, three memoirs: Cyrus Grace Dunham's A Year Without a Name, Amanda Yates Garcia's Initiated, and Carmen Maria Machado's In the Dream House.

I’m looking & listening
An important story about how we want so desperately to just turn off our brains and trust our apps, and what happens when they put us in danger. The items cast off after a divorce. The brilliant Stacy Wood on how the government keeps secrets.

GIFspiration
Rest in Power, Rep. Elijah Cummings.

I endorse
Pausing to question whether you should involve police. This week, a person dialed a non-emergency police line and requested a welfare check after he noticed his neighbor's door was open. Three or four officers arrived. And in less than a minute, Atatiana Jefferson was dead, shot through her window. She had been playing video games with her nephew, and got up to investigate what she thought was a prowler outside. She should still be here, still goofing around with her nephew and caring for her mother and working toward her dreams and living her life.

How each of us decides whether we think police will help or hurt a situation has quite a bit to do with our race and the community we were raised in. (See: The history of policing.) And so for some people, refraining from calling the cops has long been common practice, not something that requires a flow chart. Others, like me, need the reminder to actively pause and consider before dialing even a non-emergency police number.
