Reconstruction Planning for Peace

ME Henderson school logoSixth-grade history students researched the historical ideas for post-Civil War Reconstruction and created their plans. Now they are debating, compromising, and voting for the ones that they believe will offer the best chance of long-lasting peace. Students created platforms advocating for ideas from history, including that 1/4 of the profits from cotton go toward rebuilding cities and towns, freedman gets fair employment opportunities, and the South gets taxed twice as much for six months after the war to fund reconstruction costs. The groups are presenting their plans, and each class votes on the one offering the best chance of peace, demonstrating the importance of their 15th amendment rights.
