One of America’s most tireless and wide-ranging investigative journalists, David Barsamian has altered the independent media landscape, both with his weekly radio show Alternative Radio—now in its 34th year—and his books with Noam Chomsky, Eqbal Ahmad, Howard Zinn, Tariq Ali, Richard Wolff, Arundhati Roy and Edward Said. His latest books are with Noam Chomsky: Global Discontents: Rising Threats to Democracy and Edward Said: Culture and Resistance. He lectures on world affairs, imperialism, capitalism, propaganda, the media and global rebellions.
David Barsamian is the winner of the Media Education Award, the ACLU’s Upton Sinclair Award for independent journalism, and the Cultural Freedom Fellowship from the Lannan Foundation. The Institute for Alternative Journalism named him one of its Top Ten Media Heroes. He is the recipient of Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center and the South Asian Network for Secularism and Democracy. He has collaborated with the world-renowned Kronos Quartet in events in New York, London, Vienna, San Francisco and elsewhere.
Barsamian was deported from India due to his work on Kashmir and other revolts. He is still barred from traveling to “the world’s largest democracy.

World Peace Poets Community Write In & Read-In Potluck
Come to the WPJC during our office hours (T&TH 12-4PM) and join the World Peace Poets in a Community Write in about Peace and Justice. Then join the World Peace Poets organizers and participants at 5PM on the 26th of October for a closing Potluck and Read in at St. James Presbyterian Church (910 - 14th Street down-stairs).
☮ First time self-directed writing project for writers: beginners, experienced, professionals!
☮ Free and open to the public!
☮What is self-directed writing?
All Community Write-In sites will offer a place to sit and write (see calendar on reverse). A few poems and writings on peace and justice will be posted or in a folder for you to read and use as stimulus for your own writing. A World Peace Poet volunteer will be on hand, also writing, but available to answer questions.
You choose places and times from the calendar. Drop-in to write. You will be able to sit and write as long as you want in the time provided. You can write or draw anything you want to work on: poems, essays, short stories or artwork.
We have located labyrinths to walk in mindful silence, or workplaces where there is organizing and resources provided for peace and justice. All are available for “Write-In” time.
Collaborate to create a “Fusion Poem” at each site. Add your lines (up to 20 words) to the “Fusion poem” posted on the wall or in a notebook.

MLK Conference: Call for Proposals Open
The organizing committee for the 2020 Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Saturday Conference is now accepting proposals for workshops, poster sessions, and other presentation formats.
The theme of this year’s conference, Tomorrow is Today – the Fierce Urgency of NOW, draws on the principles Dr. King which Dr. King referenced in two of his most influential speeches, “I Have a Dream” delivered at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 26th, 1963 and “Beyond Viet Nam, A Time to Break Silence” at Harlem’s Riverside Church on April 4th, 1967, exactly one year before he was assassinated. His message remains as urgent today as it did over 50 years ago.
Now in its twenty-second year, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Saturday Conference offers a rare opportunity for people of all ages and walks of life to share our stories, lift our voices to call out injustice, and take actions that make Dr. King’s ideals reality.
The Conference will take place on Saturday, January 18th, 2020 at Whatcom Community College. It will feature a participatory “People’s Keynote” designed to encourage conversation and build bridges, along with morning and afternoon workshop sessions.
If you are interested in being a presenter at the 2020 Conference, please complete the online submission form. The Committee encourages you to share this link with your colleagues in Social Justice as well. The deadline for submission is Friday, November 15th, 2019. Preference will be given to individuals and groups that did not present at the 2019 Conference. Proposals from presenters at the 2019 conference will be considered if space is available.

Send your comment: No new fracked gas refinery in WA
Together, we can convince Ecology to deny key permits for the proposed Kalama methanol refinery. If built, the refinery would be one of Washington’s biggest contributors to climate-changing pollution. Send a message to the Department of Ecology here.

The Washington Department of Ecology can stand up to the gas industry’s plans to use the Northwest as an export hub for fossil fuels by denying pending permits for the proposed methanol refinery in Kalama.
“Natural gas” is a phrase promoted by the fossil fuel industry to fool consumers into believing that methane—the primary component in natural gas—is a climate-friendly fossil fuel. Don’t be fooled. At least half of the natural gas we consume comes from fracking—a dangerous and dirty process that pollutes soil, water, and air. In 2014, the fossil fuel industry used fracking to extract half of the gas produced in Canada— and it’s expected to increase to 80 percent by 2035. Bottom line: There’s nothing “natural” about destroying our climate, communities, and water.

Update on the Health of Local Activist Karen Well
Long time activist Karen Weill was operated for a brain tumor last week, which has been removed. She is for now n the University of Washington hospital in Seattle along with her husband Larry Hildes. She has been recuperating better than expected, and is talking, and eating well. Visitors are especially helpful.
