Oh, hi friends!

What kind of promises have you made to yourself lately?

How can you keep one of them today?

Inside a cathedral in Southwark in London on the River Thames, there lives a cat named Doorkins.

We circled and searched between pews and seats for an hour, and were about to leave — believing she was too shy or too sleepy to make an appearance — until, suddenly, there she was.

Oh hi, Doorkins! Love you!!

“I plan to just keep myself busy writing musicals,” he said. “That seems to be the thing that gets me through.”

Adam Gwon wrote a new musical called Scotland, PA and in this New York Times profile a few colleagues called him “the nicest man they’ve ever met” — and it’s true! I credit taking a lyric writing class at ESPA with Adam as the thing that tipped me into writing musicals in the first place. It also made me realize that enrolling in a structured class is sometimes the necessary thing to get you going on a project, or get started on something new and unfamiliar, or simply “get you through.” Maybe this is obvious, but once we’re out of school, perhaps it’s something we forget?

Your Friday Lunchtime Read

Of course Tinsley knew Mia’s book launch was on Thursday. No one could talk about anything else online all weekend, but she hadn’t dared to picture herself actually there.

Delia Cai’s insightful short story “Big Fan” gets at the dark heart of Instagram envy, the feeling of not being in the right place at the right time, New York media insularity, and so much more. A perfect read for a rainy day (or a sunny one, for that matter!).
