U.S. 17th Airborne Division, WWII

 President's Message
by Adam Coolong

Greetings, my fellow Scions!  As usual, I hope this message finds you well.  I can’t believe summer is over, and I’m already behind on fall chores!  Soon the snow will be flying in Minnesota, and it feels like Christmas is next week! Haha!

This month I thought a lot about the passing of Trooper Bill Tom.  It was through Bill that I came to the Scions in the first place, and while I never met him in person, I shared several lovely emails with him over the years, and he’ll definitely be missed by me!  If not for him, I wouldn’t be writing this now.  So Godspeed, Bill, and thank you!  Please enjoy the lovely biographical write-up, penned by the man himself, later in this newsletter.

I’m also excited at the recent news regarding our upcoming trip “Back to the ETO”, for the 75th Anniversary of Operation Varsity in March, 2020—we have a pretty full tour group, with over fifty travelers, including THREE 17th Airborne veterans!  This is set to be a truly memorable journey, and I can think of no better occasion to make it.  While there is still time to sign up for the trip as of this writing, time is RUNNING OUT.  As of November 1, we’ll be accepting reservations on a wait-list basis, meaning if you want to get on the “going” list, you’d better literally do it today!

HOWEVER…

You still have a wonderful opportunity to contribute, even if you’re not planning to make the trip yourself.

We are hosting a “Go Fund Me” campaign fundraiser, to help with our veterans’ travel expenses, to hopefully make them as comfortable as possible.  They made the first trip via C-46, C-47, and CG-4A, folks.  Let’s help send them first class this go-round, shall we?

Details for the Go Fund Me campaign can be found here, and your donations are 100% tax deductible.

Thank you all for your support, and as always,

Airborne All the Way!

Attention 17th Airborne Scions and Veterans!!

2020 Remembrance Trip to the ETO

by Jeff Schumacher

October Update

Greetings fellow Scions and veterans.   We are less than 5 months away from our 2020 return trip to the ETO.  This 75th Anniversary remembrance trip is lining up to be something quite special, with a great mix of repeat and new travelers and several generations of Scions.  We have over 50 committed travelers, and 3 veteran troopers of the 17th Airborne making the trip as well.

We’ve been soliciting traveler interest since June, and it’s now time to move forward with the commitments.  Accordingly, this is notice that as of November 1st, reservations will be accepted only on a ‘wait list’ basis, meaning if someone has to cancel, that opening can be filled from the wait list.

We are excited about the trip, and the strong support from travelers.  However, whether you’re able to go or not, you can absolutely make a real difference for a veteran who is, and I’m making this special appeal for your needed support.  Please make a donation to the Scions “Dead Man’s Ridge Walk” Fund, or to the GoFundMe campaign (see URL below) set up to help with veterans’ travel expenses. We’re very fortunate to have several veterans making the trip.  Our donations will serve to assure  comfortable travel for our troopers on their long journey on their return to the ETO and back home again.  They’ve earned it, they deserve it, and it’s up to us to make it happen.

Tell your friends and family, neighbors, co-workers, doctors, lawyers...everyone!

Here’s the GoFundMe page:

https://www.gofundme.com/f/get-a-wwii-vet-to-the-75th-bastongewesel

Many thanks for your continued support to keep the legacy of the 17th Airborne Division alive, and growing.

If you would like to participate, send an email to Lottie Chipego at "lottiechip@comcast.net" so that she can coordinate with you. More details will be in future newsletters.
William "Bill" Tom
Editor Emeritus - Thunder Mail Call

by Ed Siergiej Jr.

The veterans of 17th Airborne Division included many talented and dedicated individuals who had a passion for honoring their comrades, both those who fell in battle, and those who were fortunate to return home. Bill Tom was one of these outstanding veterans. The records of the 17th Airborne Division record that Bill joined the organization in 1973. He attended many reunions of the organization through the years, and often promoted the 17th Airborne Division at events and parades in his hometown.

When the 17th Airborne Division Association disbanded in 2007, Bill created an email newsletter, "Thunder Mail Call" to keep the men of the 17th in touch with one another. He used his
experience as a pharmacist to give helpful advice to his former comrades. When the effort to keep this publication became too challenging, the Scions incorporated it into this email newsletter, "Thunder From Heaven".

We will continue to keep "Thunder Mail Call" as a part of our newsletter in Bills Memory. Bill submitted his biography to us several years ago, and we republish it as a tribute to him.
Saving our History # 21

By David Shortt

Greetings, Troopers and SCIONS! This month we will show the personal effects of STANLEY KASAVAGE JR, who entered the US Army in 1943, from Philadelphia, Pa. KASAVAGE was of Russian descent, his father having come over from the old country. KASAVAGE trained as a Infantryman, but after Parachute training, strangely, was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 466th Parachute Field Artillery, 17th Airborne Division.

KASAVAGE served in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe Campaignswith the 17th Airborne Division. It is possible he was attached to the 101st Airborne Division for observation and liaison duties for "Operation Market Garden" in September, 1944 (It was common for inexperienced formations to send Observers to bring back their experience to the parent formation).  For Operation "Varsity," KASAVAGE was assigned to the Stick carrying Brigadier Generals DALBEY and GAITHER, both of whom were attached to the 17th for the operation. KASAVAGE and the 466th PFA landed on DZ X, south of Hamminkeln and fought as Infantry until able to retrieve their pack howitzers.

After "V-E" day, KASAVAGE was assigned to 101st Airborne Division in Southern Germany and Austria for occupation, then home to the US, ultimately for assignment to the 82nd Airborne Division and discharge. He returned to Philadelphia, where he married and raised a family, while working most of his life as a Short Haul Truck Driver, and died in 1992. His son STANLEY KASAVAGE III followed his Father's footsteps and served as a Paratrooper in combat, in the Central Highlands of the Republic of South Viet Nam, 1966-67. Thanks to SCION STANLEY III, who recently donated his father's wartime personal effects to the Veterans Memorial Museum Foundation, for preservation and display to the public. Questions or comments?

This collection of letters written by her father (KIA in Operation Varsity) is edited by Scion Rives Fowlkes Carol. The book is available at Politics and Prose, 202-363-4119
In this viscerally exciting account, a paratrooper-turned-historian reveals the details of the largest airborne operation of World War II—one that dropped 17,000 Allied paratroopers deep into the heart of Nazi Germany.

On the morning of March 24, 1945, more than two thousand Allied aircraft droned through a cloudless sky toward Germany. Escorted by swarms of darting fighters, the armada of transport planes carried 17,000 troops to be dropped via parachute and glider, on the far banks of the Rhine River. Four hours later, after what was the war’s largest airdrop, all major objectives had been seized. The invasion smashed Germany’s last line of defense and gutted Hitler’s war machine; the war in Europe ended less than two months later.

Four Hours of Fury follows the 17th Airborne Division as they prepare for Operation Varsity, a campaign that would rival Normandy in scale and become one of the most successful and important of the war. Even as the Third Reich began to implode, it was vital for Allied troops to have direct access into Germany to guarantee victory—the 17th Airborne secured that bridgehead over the River Rhine. And yet their story has until now been relegated to history’s footnotes.

Reminiscent of A Bridge Too Far and Masters of the AirFour Hours of Fury does for the 17th Airborne what Band of Brothers did for the 101st. It is a captivating, action-packed tale of heroism and triumph spotlighting one of the most under-chronicled and dangerous operations of World War II.

Scion Richard Pohanish sent us this review of "Four Hours of Fury". Tooper Calpin's photo is below

I am a member of your organization. My father, Francis Calpin served with Battery E of the 155th A/T A/A Battalion. I was able to obtain an advance reading copy of James Fenalon's new book about Operation Varsity entitled Four Hours of Frenzy. I wanted to report that its an excellent read containing  a lot of nitty-gritty details about life in the 17th as well as exciting stories of the Bulge and Varsity. For various reasons, Varsity was largely ignored by the press as well as many WW2 historians. The author, Fenalon (a former paratrooper and jump master), has done a great job of placing this urgent and important event in its historical context. It will make for great reading on the beach this summer.

For many years, Trooper Bill Tom (194/C) was a major contributor to the original hard copy newsletter of the 17th Airborne Division Association, "Thunder From Heaven." After the dissolution of the Association in 2007, Bill began an email version of the newsletter, and continued that publication, "Thunder Mail Call" until the formation of the Scions Organization in 2011. With Bill's help, we integrated his newsletter into this publication. We were saddened to hear of Bills passing on September 10, 2019. We dedicate this portion of our newsletter to Bill.

FOREVER IS NOT FOR EVERYONE
by Betsy Durkin Matthes
Daughter of Lt. Col. Edwin Ostberg (507HQ1 & 325th GIR)

My father was LT. Col Edwin Joseph Ostberg, who served as both the Commander of the 1st Battalion of the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne, and later assigned by General Gavin to be the Commander of the 2nd Battalion of the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne.

Since the December 2015 publication of my book FOREVER IS NOT FOR EVERYONE, I have donated all profits from its sales to both the 507th and the 325th Associations. Since they have both recently disbanded, all the proceeds of the book are being donated to the Museum Of Aviation Foundation in Warner Robins, GA. to assist with the upkeep of the museum's 507th exhibition and to the
Scions of the 17th Airborne Division.

Since most of the paratroopers from the 507th P.I.R. went on after D-Day to serve with the 17th Airborne Division, I think your members would be interested to read my book. Paratroopers and friends from the 507th, including Paul F. Smith, Roy Creek, Frank Naughton, Roland Daniel, Rufus Broadaway, Earl Geoffrion, Robert Vannatter, and Glen Lapine are mentioned prominently in my book.

It is available on Amazon.com in both a printed and digital version. Should any member of the 17th Airborne Division wish an autographed copy, they can obtain one through this website.

IN MEMORY OF THE FALLEN SOLDIER
by Isaac Epps

   The ones who went
   Were truly sent
   To do a Noble Deed;
   When evil showed
   They took the load
   In Justice, they believed.
   They heard the call
   And gave their All
And some did not not come back.
   They knew the chance

   But took the stance
   When Liberty was attacked.
   It Speaks of Duty, Faith; and Love;
   It speaks of a respect
   for Country; For Others,
   For the Right of Man;
   To forget would be neglect.
   On this Their Day

   We stop to pray
   Their Memory shall live;
The sacrifice they made was Life.

Bill Tom
194/C

"Life Member" of the 17th Airborne Division Association

Editor emeritus of "Thunder Mail Call"

William K. Tom at age 95 passed away peacefully at home on September 10, 2019 with his loving wife, Linda, by his side.

He was born in 1924 to immigrant parents, Mar Shee Tong (aka Tom Jong) and Ng Koon Lan, in the Sacramento Delta town of Isleton, California. He was the fifth child of eight; only five lived into adulthood. During the Great Depression, his parents struggled to provide adequate food for Bill and his siblings with no extra money for new clothes or childhood treats. Growing up in the era of the Chinese Exclusion Act and legalized discrimination, Bill attended a segregated school for “Orientals” where Chinese was the primary language spoken; consequently, he did not develop early English proficiency.

In 1943, his life was forever changed when he was drafted into the Army. He was fed with regularity, received his first set of new clothes (uniform and boots), developed proficiency in English as a second language, and learned about the world beyond the small town of Isleton. His Army entrance test scores qualified him for entry to the elite Army Specialized Training Program and enrollment at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he studied engineering.

Bill was sent to medic training after a year of study at MIT. He declined the Army's offer to attend medical school; instead, he chose to serve as a medic, attached to the 17th Airborne Infantry, in the European Theater of WWII. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

In 1952, Bill graduated Summa Cum Laude at the top of his class from the University of California School of Pharmacy. He worked as a hospital pharmacist, owned his own specialty eye pharmacy, and worked for the State of California as an auditor. His proudest achievement was the groundbreaking development of the National Drug Data File and International Drug Data File, a pharmaceutical database which modernized the pharmacy profession worldwide increasing the accuracy and safety of dispensing medication to patients.

After retirement, Bill enjoyed many things: traveling, playing the banjo and harmonica, oil painting, acting as a movie extra, being a ham radio examiner, planning pharmacy class reunions, being the editor of his ham radio club newsletter, planning Isleton reunions, and having lunch with his many friends. As a proud veteran, he attended the annual 17th Airborne reunions and served as the editor of the Thunder from Heaven newsletter. In 2020, he will be awarded posthumously the group Congressional Gold Medal for Chinese American Veterans of World War II.

Bill was predeceased by his parents and siblings Howard Tom, Connie King, and Warren Tom. He is survived by his adored wife, Linda; children Katherine (Edmond), Jacqueline (Carl), William, and Warren Russell (Katie); and grandchildren Robert, Rachel, Ashlyn, Terilyn (Victor), Mary Lynn, and Sherilyn. He is also survived by his loving sister, May Chan (Alfred), and numerous nieces and nephews.

Private burial with military honors will take place at a later date at the National Cemetery in Dixon, California.

All veterans of the 17th are considered as "Distinguished Honorary Members" of the Scions.  We exist to honor you, our veterans.
We do not ask for dues from our honored veterans, as we exist to honor you!

Regular membership in the "Scions of the 17th Airborne" is open to any descendant or family member of any trooper who served with the 17th during its existence.

Associate Membership is available to individuals who have an interest in the history of the 17th Airborne, but are not related to a veteran of the 17th. Associate Members do not have voting rights.

To join our growing organization, contact the Scions at:  Scionsofthe17thAirborne@gmail.com.

Our website contains a wealth of information on the 17th Airborne and its history, and our Members Section (open exclusively to dues-paying Scions) contains hundreds of pages of documents obtained from the National Archives!  Check it out at www.17thscions.org!

We also have a great Facebook page, where there are lots of great posts by friends of the 17th in the U.S. and in Europe. Check us out on Facebook at:
