Prince George Clinical Educator Outreach Trip June 24-27, 2019

In June 2019, I had the privilege of travelling to Prince George for a clinical outreach trip.  In four days, I met with Rehab Assistants, Speech-Language Pathologists, Audiologists, Team Leaders, and Managers at the following sites:
  • The Child Development Centre (CDC) of Prince George
  • Northern Interior Health Unit – Prince George
  • School District #57 (Prince George)
  • Prince George Native Friendship Centre
  • University Hospital of Northern British Columbia (UHNBC)
  • Student Northern Aphasia Project (SNAP) at UHNBC
During this trip, I met with seven of our 1st year students completing their second clinical externships at the CDC, UHNBC and SNAP to talk about what they had been learning so far during their placements.

One of the highlights of my trip was observing the SNAP clinic.

This student-led clinic for People with Aphasia (PWA) not only addresses the significant need for adult outpatient services in Prince George and the surrounding area, but also focuses on interdisciplinary teaching, whereby the SLP students train other health professional students from Physiotherapy, Nursing, Medicine, Occupational Therapy, Social Work, and Dietetics in communication partner training, based on Supported Conversation for Adults with Aphasia (SCA). Funded by a Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund (TLEF), the SNAP clinic began as a pilot project in April 2018 with Elaina McCarron, Project Coordinator and Clinical Supervisor, and four 2nd year student completing Externship #4, followed by four 1st year students completing Externship #1.

This project was extended for an additional seven weeks for Externship #2 in June 2019.  It was truly inspiring to observe the clients and family members whose lives had been impacted by the SNAP clinic and to see four of our students clinically “in action.”  As I watched the students run the 1.5-hour therapy group sessions with six clients with varying types and severity of Aphasia, I witnessed the caliber of the training that SASS students are receiving in their coursework and their clinical placements.  Also, one can only rightly appreciate the amount of planning, preparation, patience, organization, and dedication that Elaina had put into this project when observing it in person.

Thank you to the city of Prince George for hosting 7 of our 1st year students for clinical placements in June-July 2019.  Thank you to each and every person I met with during this trip.  I know meetings take away from your busy schedules, workloads, and most importantly, your clients.  UBC’s clinical externship program would not exist without dedicated, supportive, and nurturing Clinical Educators like you.

With sincere appreciation,
Cheryl McGee

We would like to introduce you to Nicole Hewamudalige. Nicole is a Speech-Language Pathologist who splits her time between school district and private practice, and has supervised UBC SLP students since 2012. Nicole currently holds a Clinical Assistant Professor appointment with SASS/UBC.

This year, Nicole became the new Clinical Faculty Advisory Council Representative for UBC's School of Audiology and Speech Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine. The committee engages representatives across all departments and schools within the Faculty of Medicine, and facilitates inter-professional collaboration. Have you heard of the SASS Externship Support Fund?

Each year, many of our students travel out of town to learn our professions. In fact, each student must complete two out of town placements in their program. With mounting living and travel costs, this can be a financial hardship for students without the support of donations from our community and valued donor endowments. To help our students, SASS has created the SASS Externship Fund. To read more about it, and make a donation, go to https://donate.support.ubc.ca/page/18682/donate/1?transaction.dirgift=Audiology%20Externship%20Support%20Fund%20O631. To view other areas where you can give to the school, please click here (https://audiospeech.ubc.ca/giving/).
