Read for the Record! – November 7, 2019
The World’s Largest Shared Reading Experience

Celebrate reading together and add your number to the 20 million who have shared the same book on the same day.  Don’t have the book?  Baker & Taylor does.

“This year, Jumpstart is celebrating our 14th anniversary of Read for the Record® with the book Thank You, Omu! by Oge Mora.  Jumpstart’s Read for the Record brings together millions of people each year in classrooms, libraries, community centers, and homes across the US. This annual campaign was launched over a decade ago to highlight the importance of building early literacy and language skills for EVERY child, so that all children have the opportunity to enter kindergarten prepared to succeed.

Thank You, Omu! tells the story of a generous elderly woman who makes a fantastic pot of thick red stew. The scent from her stew travels all throughout her neighborhood and brings all of her community members over to her home for a taste. By the end, she shares a lovely feast with her neighbors where everyone contributes to the meal.”
For more information and to register your group read-aloud of Thank You, Omu! visit:

Make the pledge to read and maybe make a pot of stew, too!

Calendar

October 23 @ 9:15 am: Chautauqua Institution: Understanding Archives: An Introduction to Archival Basics

While proper archival procedures help ensure safe and effective management of collections, the individuals who care for collections also play a key role. However, volunteers, historians, and other professionals at collecting institutions may find themselves in the position of "archivist" without formal training in the profession. Topics covered during this workshop will include the fundamentals of archival appraisal, acquisition, and access; proper storage materials; and the most common preservation problems found within paper-based archival collections. This workshop will also touch briefly on processing, arrangement, and description.
Register at https://dhpsny.org/workshops (DHPSNY workshops are free!)

October 25 @9 am: WNYLRC Workshop: Copyright Boot Camp for Librarians
During this 5-hour workshop, attendees will learn the fundamentals of copyright, explore the copyright laws specifically pertaining to libraries and archives, consider copyright issues related to streaming, digitization, ADA accommodations, and get practical tips for negotiating content licenses. Designed to be accessible and  interactive, this workshop invites you submit your questions in advance, or bring them that day.  Attendees will leave with worksheets and written materials to assist with managing day-to-day copyright concerns at their library.  Presented by Stephanie (Cole) Adams, WNYLRC's "Ask the Lawyer" service attorney.
