Our Last Meeting
Chip Siskey helped us to "Think Outside the Chuck" by turning a multi-axis clock on the chuck. The object of his demo was to show how you could use a chuck to turn an angled (canted) base on a table/shelf clock. He started by applying bandsawn wedges on the blank with turners tape and mounting it in the chuck at the resulting cant. Then he turned the end, which will become the base of the clock. By removing one of the jaws of the chuck he could mount the clock in an offset position so he could drill the recess for the clock. The face of the clock is turned next (after removing the excess from the top of the blank). At this point he added the desired features and shape of the face. Mounted by the clock recess he finished turning the back half. The critical point in this turning is to maintain the crisp clean points of the base to keep the clock from tipping backward.
Thank you, Chip for the educational demonstration and for helping us think beyond the confines of the norm.
The video of each meetings' demo are available in the library on DVD to be checked out by members. Also, the video will be available online at; YouTube Independence Woodturners
The video of Chip's demo has not yet been produced due to time constraints. It will be edited and placed on YouTube as soon as possible.
