Stop by to see our new permanent art & poetry installation at Manierre Elementary School (1420 N Hudson Ave, Chicago)! Eighth grade students had an opportunity to work with world-class artists on a project that included poetry, acting, tableau, and photography. Along with students from two other local schools (Catherine Cook and Franklin Fine Arts) they created artwork that explored themes of community and self-care in a diverse environment.

DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS. DIFFERENT LIVES.

A MOMENT IN TIME

Students were encouraged to think about how to create tableaus showing the joy, hope, pain, power, and love in their lives. Lookingglass Theatre Founding Ensemble Member, Andrew White asked the kids, “What do you know that your parents don’t know or the adults in your community don’t know.”
On Friday September 6th we installed the Manierre student work on the fence along Hudson Street for everyone to observe and enjoy.  Poet and Visual Artist, Kwabena Foli said of the work the kids did, “If everybody in a community saw each other as an extension of themselves, my theory is that we’d treat each other differently — in a better way -- and hopefully if they see this poetry they’ll feel that way.”  Cecil McDonald Jr., the internationally exhibited Photographer & Artist who designed the project, noted that the kids here “make interesting things and they make things that need to be considered, and contemplated, and thought about in a very serious way.”

Art + Impact with After School Matters

Summer 2019

This summer, 16 teen artists had a job in our Art + Impact program with After School Matters. Through a series of studio projects, they practiced figure drawing, mixed media and painting skills -- with a goal of becoming better agents of their own representation. To engage the community in a dialogue and celebrate their work, we held a teen art showcase on August 7th! Thanks to all our neighbors and to Alderman Brian Hopkins who came out to support this special event.

Fall 2019

New this fall, we're now partnering with After School Matters on a school-year Art + Impact program. Teen artists are exploring perspectives on identity and ties to community identity through self portraits and mask making. They will also have opportunities for special workshops with Lookingglass Theatre Company ensemble member J. Nicole Brooks, writer and director of their upcoming play centered around Cabrini-Green in 1981, Her Honor Jane Byrne.

Mural Project with Pierce Cruz

Want to be part of artist Pierce Cruz’s current mural project? Children who would like their image included in the mural can pose for a photo, and the artist will draw their portrait based on the photo. Everyone is welcome to add color, designs, or uplifting messages to the artwork. Stop in the studio any Tuesday or Thursday from 3:30-5:30!
