HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL LECTURE
~IS THE PAST A FOREIGN COUNTRY?~
Mr.Ronald Leopold, Executive Director of the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, will be the speaker at the Cohen Center’s 22nd annual Holocaust and Genocide Studies lecture on Monday evening, October 21st at 7:00. Unfortunately, that is the same date as BAJC’s Simchat Torah celebration at the West Village Meeting House, which we hope you will attend, but if you opt for the Cohen Center’s program, it will be in the Mabel Brown Room in the student center at Keene State College. Mr. Leopold will reflect on the girl who would have turned 90 this year and will share insights into the work of the Anne Frank House, which serves as a mirror to the past and a window to the present.

Safety Training
Michael Knapp, Susan Auslander and Stephan Brandstatter ( security committee) have been working with the Brattleboro Fire Dept. on our Emergency Preparedness Protocol project. A couple of things we identified that are lacking or maybe could use refreshing are familiarity with, and ability to use, the defibrillator and also how to perform CPR. Captain Keir will schedule a training session at the Brattleboro Fire Station on Elliot Street, for the Board, the Security committee, others who are frequently in the synagogue, and any BAJC members who wish to acquire CPR skills at no cost. We will set a time for the training at the fire station that will be convenient for most or all interested people. Space is limited to first 20 people. We have five signed up already. Please reply with preferred weekday and time. Evenings are recommended. The training lasts 2-3 hours.

MESSAGE FROM SAINT ROSNER
Hello dear BAJC members,
With Fall in the air, gratitude for our homes takes on extra poignancy. For those who don’t have a home, the Brattleboro Seasonal Overflow Shelter provides evening meals and nightly beds for local homeless people at the Winston Prouty Center on the Austine Campus. From November to May, BAJC has the privilege of preparing and serving meals once a month for SOS residents.
To offer a practical kindness where a brother or sister has a physical need is to be an agent of hope in a hope-hungry world. Psalm 119 declares, “Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the Lord. ’Open my eyes that I may see wondrous things out of your righteous law.” Here’s a great opportunity to feed the poor. BAJC’s dates for preparing and serving home cooked, belly-filling, heart- warming meals are Thursdays: Nov 7, Jan 2, Feb 6, Mar 5, April 2, and the very special Christmas Eve dinner on Tuesday, Dec. 24th.

Celebrate Sukkot with the BAJC Community
There are many ways to celebrate this festive harvest holiday this year at BAJC.
October 13th 1-2pm: Help decorate the sukkah! BYOD (Bring Your Own Decorations), or just show up to help.
October 18th 7-9pm: Musical Kabbalat Shabbat led by Rabbi Lee. Shabbat Dinner will be provided afterward. Weather permitting, we will sing and eat in the sukkah.
October 20th 4:30-5:30pm: All are invited to join the Hebrew School kids and families for a Hoshana Rabba Party in the sukkah. Hoshana Rabba is the last day of Sukkot— in Israel traditionally the time to pray for rain— so we will be praying for all kinds of ecological well-being by singing songs, shaking branches and beating willow branches on the ground.
October 21 5:30 Yizkor/6:30 Simchat Torah This year, Rabbi Lee will lead a Yizkor service, then will lead a contemplative chanting service for Simchat Torah that will include walking/dancing with the Torah scrolls. If you enjoyed the singing we did at High Holidays, you will love this style of observing Simchat Torah. Celebrating in this way is a special passion for Rabbi Lee, so it is guaranteed to be a singular event! In the chapel at All Souls Church.
Throughout the week of Sukkot (sundown on October 13 through October 20th), feel free to stop by BAJC to enjoy the sukkah ~ have a meal, hold a meeting, make music, meet friends, or just sit quietly enjoying the fall foliage surrounding our synagogue.
PLEASE NOTE: The Yizkor service (5:30) and the Simchat Torah celebration (6:30) will take place at the West Village Meeting House ( All Souls Church) on Monday, October 21st. All other activities will take place at the BAJC synagogue at 151 Greenleaf Street in West Brattleboro.

Facing Closed Doors
There is a series of theater programs in Greenfield exploring how oppressive practices by
dominant social groups threaten the cultural identity of minorities—particularly contemporary young people. Here is some information about two upcoming programs—part of series titled Facing Closed Doors.
“An Echo of Laughter”on Sunday October 13th, 7:30pm at 170 Main Street in Greenfield, a rehearsed reading about a Palestinian teacher who uses Anne Frank’s Diary in her English class but questions its value to her students to read about what many would regard as the experiences of an enemy. This program is free and open to the public.
“The Diary of Anne Frank,” a fully-staged production of this timeless play on October 18, 19, 24, 25, 26 at 7:30 and October 20 at 2:00, at Hawks & Reed Performing Arts Center, 289 Main St., Greenfield. Peace- Inside and Out

Harmonograms and Collaborations
“PEACE - INSIDE AND OUT” is the 11th annual Papercuts and Peace exhibit at All Souls Chuch featuring BAJC’s own Stuart Copans. The exhibit, which focuses on the importance of creating and maintaining internal peace while working toward peace in the external world, involves collaborative works combining papercuts and harmonograms. Peace is a process, not an event, and the integration of papercuts and harmonograms, of text and abstraction, of inside and outside is an ongoing process which is visible in the artworks of the exhibit, which is available for all to see from nine to noon on weekday mornings, until October 27th
