Standards Australia has published AS/NZS5139:2019 Electrical installations – Safety of battery systems for use with power conversion equipment

Standards Australia has recently published AS/NZS 5139:2019, Electrical installations – Safety of battery systems for use with power conversion equipment. This new standard replaces the AS/NZS4086 1997 Secondary Battery standard that had become largely outdated through advances in technology. Once adopted, this standard will become a mandatory requirement replacing the current “Best Practice” guidelines in place.

The standard is intended for use by all installers, designers, and manufacturers associated with the provision of domestic and commercial grid connected battery energy storage systems. The standard sets out the requirements for the safe installation of both batteries and the connected power conversion equipment (PCE) that supplies AC power. The standard is applicable for all systems up to and including 200 kWH in capacity. The standard can also be applied to larger systems and/or where multiple smaller systems are installed as one system with a combined capacity of greater than 200 kWH.

Supporting your Complete Wellbeing

At some time in their life, around half of all Australians will experience a mental health issue. A similar number have left a job due to poor mental health conditions. Look around you. If you haven’t experienced this yourself, you know someone who has.

Stress, anxiety and other factors can build up, taking a toll on your health – and those around you. Every year, around 190 construction workers take their own life.* For young, male construction workers, the incidence of suicide is twice the national average.

We see a similar pattern in the electrical industry with our own data showing that 28.5% of income protection claims are for mental health reasons.** That 28.5% represents around 13,000 people – and their families.

We know the stats, but what can we do?

We know that mental, physical and financial wellbeing are closely related. How you feel physically – whether you’re short-term fatigued, or unwell in the longer term – can affect how you feel mentally.

Likewise, worrying about money – having enough to pay your bills this week, or having enough for retirement – can make you mentally and physically sick. That’s why we offer our EnergyCare program to all our members at no cost.

Included in the program is Mates in Energy, part of Mates in Construction, a charity that exists to prevent suicide in the construction industry. Mates in Energy offers training around how to recognise the early warning signs, how to access support, and how to talk to someone who is feeling suicidal.

(If you or someone you know needs immediate support, please call the Mates Helpline on 1300 642 111.)

Let’s talk

Because we understand the importance of physical, mental and financial health, we build it into everything we do. As part of our EnergyCare program, all our members get free access to Best Doctors, a network of 50,000 medical specialists from around the world. Whether your concerns are mental or physical, these specialists are available to provide an expert second opinion.

And these are just some of the benefits available to Energy Super members – at no cost. Find out more here.

Energy Super is an Industry Super Fund. We exist only to benefit our members, not shareholders. See how we put the energy into super here or contact Energy Super on 1300 436 374.

Join the Movember Movement

The 1st of November signals the official start of Movember - raising awareness around men's health issues, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men's suicide.

For those members that attended our August VIC Branch Meeting at the Anglers Tavern, Ryan McKinnis (Senior Manager, Community Development at Movember) presented the alarming statistics that 6 men each day in Australia take their own life; together with the positive impact the Movember Foundation is doing for men’s health on a global scale.

To support such a great cause, the VIC/TAS Area Advisory Committee (AAC) is kindly asking for all Victorian and Tasmanian Master Electricians members to get involved and participate in this great initiative.
