Glyphosate application in Sri Lankan agricultural Lands: do we circumvent Chronic Kidney Disease of unknown etiology?
By Dr. Buddhika Gunawardana and Prof. Mahesh Jayaweera
A mysterious new form of chronic kidney disease of unknownetiology (CKDu) strikes mainly agricultural communities in the tropics. Globally, the cause remains unknown and in Sri Lanka, CKDu has been a critical health concern for the past two decades.
It is likely that the emergence of CKDu results from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. One line of investigation considers a possible correlation between contamination of water with herbicides. Dr. Buddhika Gunawardana, Advisory Programme Committee member of the IWA Water and Development Congress & Exhibition 2019, together with Professor Mahesh Jayaweera, University of Moratuwa, are researching the presence and persistence of a herbicide commonly applied in agricultural lands in Sri Lanka until banned in 2015 in areas with reported cases of the disease.
