Ancient yoga was dominated by men.

In fact, only until Indra Devi studied with famed classical instructor
Krishnamacharya in the early 1900s did women start to have a place for their mats. Devi became known as the "Mother of Western Yoga", just as B.K.S. Iyengar was presumed to be the "father".

Today, of the 300 million yoga practitioners worldwide, 72% are women. Yet regardless of how someone identifies, yoga offers many benefits. Let's encourage everyone to practice!

Come Say Hi!
In case you don't get enough of me week-to-week (HA!), please come out for the free Raccoon River Reading Series Monday, November 25th at 6:30 p.m. at Beaverdale Books, 2629 Beaver Ave. in Des Moines. Many authors will be featured in 10-minute increments, so it's a great way to support local artists and learn about new books you might want for chilly Iowa nights. I'll be reading from my collection, one moment of a single days: essays, featuring the photography of Lynne A. Kasey.

Private Sessions
Although my primary class offerings are in corporate settings, I still teach many private sessions, and appreciate this opportunity! Many people love the direct guidance and attention of personalized yoga sessions. This is a more custom experience to expand a home practice, address specific goals, continue recovery from an injury, or experience in-depth instruction outside of class. Personalized sequences are developed so you can follow a path of your design.

I meet with clients in their homes or at the Des Moines Public Library Central Campus. If you or someone you know desires this type of personal attention, please reach out for more information.

Reminder for Des Moines Public Schools Teachers and Employees!
So glad to have both locations and days active and humming! This is just a reminder that if you're not getting emails from Tracey Kelley Yoga to learn about class schedules, times, and other important information, make sure to check your "Junk" folder, then approve "Never Block Sender" and "Never Block Domain Name." I believe you can also put my email address on an approved list in your Outlook. Please remember: while I don't communicate through email more than once or twice a month, it's the only way I notify participants of upcoming classes,or session changes due to inclement weather or illness. Thank you!

Ready for a Personal Consultation?
Let's plan on making a phone date for your updated consultations! These usually last about 30 minutes if I have one on file for you already, and 60 minutes if you're new to any corporate program.

Oooodles of Reasons to Do Yoga

So often, people ask me about the benefits of yoga, trying to quantify their time or the cost in ways that align with their value systems. My standard reply--which at first seems like a copout!--is what someone experiences from yoga varies considerably with each individual. I rely on you to tell me how yoga impacts your wellbeing and life. I collect anecdotal evidence to use when talking to someone without a regular practice as to why they might consider it. To balance the perspective, here are some other sources providing input on this topic.

What to Know About Yoga: The Short As

Many aspects of yoga originated in Sanskrit, an Indo-European language dating back 3,500 years. I've mentioned many times that I don't often speak in Sanskrit during classes because I want practice to be accessible to everyone, but it's fun to learn about the language.

One thing to know as it applies to your practice is the "a" vowels are short. So asana, which means pose or posture, is pronounced "AH-sah-nah." Your favorite pose, Savasana, also known as Corpse Pose or Final Relaxation, is pronounced "SAH-vah-sah-nah" or "Sah-VAH-sah-nah."

If you'd like to know more about yoga Sanskrit, ask me for resources!
