Note from Dr. Cannon
October 14, 2019
Dear Breton Downs Families,
What a busy time of year it is! Not only do we have many fun events happening within the building, but we are also planning for many exciting events in our community. Please see the detailed list below:
Hearts of Gold Events
- Parade on Wednesday, October 16 at 4:00 p.m.
The parade will start at 4:00 p.m. at Beechwood and Lake Drive and then turn westbound onto Lake Drive towards the high school. It will continue on Lake Drive before turning right onto Breton, left into Gaslight Village, left onto Bagley, and ending in front of the High School on Lake Drive.
The tradition of parade participants throwing candy from their vehicles will continue; however, we ask for your assistance in keeping our children safe while they retrieve the candy. Young children tend to run into the street to grab candy, putting them too close to the moving vehicles in the parade. We are requesting that parents keep children near the curb and not allow them to enter the street. Parade participants have been instructed to throw candy near the sidewalks. EGRHS Student Council members will be walking along the parade procession in orange vests to help keep young children safe and away from the moving vehicles.
- Welcome Back/Hearts of Gold Family Picnic- Friday, October 18
We will be having the Breton Downs Welcome Back Family Picnic on Friday, October 18 during lunch time (11:24 a.m. - 12:10 p.m.). Families are invited to join their children and enjoy a picnic lunch from Grand Rapids Food Service. The meal includes a hot dog, watermelon, carrots, baked beans, sun chips, and milk. Adults and siblings will NOT be able to use a student’s account to pay for lunch. Cash only for adults ($4.70/meal) and siblings ($3.50/meal). Students and families will be served lunch in the gym and if your child would prefer a lunch from home, please plan on packing one for him/her. Parents are encouraged to bring blankets to sit on outside. As always, we will be emphasizing that our students eat first and then play. We want to make sure they have energy for the afternoon! If it rains, the picnic will be held inside the main gym.
- All-school picture- Friday, October 18
Students should wear their Hearts of Gold t-shirts or a yellow shirt to school.
- Hearts of Gold Football Game- Friday, October 18 at 5:00 p.m.
Our students had the opportunity to Make a Difference for those impacted by epilepsy by raising funds via collecting cans, lemonade stands, doing household chores, etc. We look forward to presenting the organization with any funds raised at Friday’s Hearts of Gold football game. Shirts will be on sale throughout the week. Please check the Breton Downs calendar here for exact dates and times.
Parent/Teacher Conferences- Reminder
Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on Thursday, October 17 and Tuesday, October 22. This is a wonderful time to discuss your child’s progress and areas of growth with the classroom teacher. If you have any questions regarding your P/T Conference time, please contact Lisa Rogers at lrogers@egrps.org
Halloween- Thursday, October 31
Halloween is fast approaching! Please be sure to remember no full face masks, blood, or weapons when thinking of costumes. Our all-school Halloween Parade will begin at 2:30 p.m. Weather permitting our parade will be outside again this year!
Veterans Day Assembly- Monday, November 11
Breton Downs Elementary School invites all relatives and friends of our school community who have served or are serving in the United States military to join us on Monday, November 11 at 9:30 a.m. for our annual Veterans Day Assembly. Our PTO is sponsoring a reception in our Learning Commons (for our veterans) starting at 8:45 a.m. In order to better plan our program, a RSVP of the veterans attending the reception and program is appreciated.
