COMMUNITY PHARMACY CONTRACTUAL FRAMEWORK, THE PHARMACY QUALITY SCHEME AND PRIMARY CARE NETWORKS - INFORMATION EVENING

Book now:
Events in Cheshire West & Chester and the Wirral next week

CPCW is inviting contractors and their teams to join us at events to learn more about the new Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework, the Pharmacy Quality Scheme and hear top tips on delivering a successful Community Pharmacist Consultation Service in your branch. We will also be introducing our Primary Care Networks approach, discovering the importance of them and hearing more about how the Pharmacy Quality Scheme indicator for PCN engagement will work.

Events have been scheduled in the four Local Authority areas covered by CPCW.  We will be running a supportive exercise across PCN groups on the night so if you can, please attend your local one but if you are unable to attend that one please do book onto an alternative as it will still be relevant.

Further information can be found on the LPC website at http://bit.ly/CPCWEvents

SERVICE NEWS

FINAL CPCS SERVICE SPECIFICATION PUBLISHED

The final version of the Community Pharmacist Consultation Service (CPCS) service specification has now been published - Please download a copy below if you are intending to deliver the service.

CPCS service specification

Prior to this final version of the service specification being published, a draft version was published on the NHSBSA website. A small number of changes were made to the text during the NHSE&I internal governance process.

The only substantive change from a community pharmacy perspective was for references to annual reviews of Standard Operating Procedures and Business Continuity Plans to be amended to regular reviews, providing greater flexibility for pharmacy contractors.

ONE YOU CHESHIRE EAST RE-LAUNCH

On 1 November ‘One You Cheshire East’ will be re-launched by Reed Wellbeing.

The free healthy lifestyle service will continue to offer residents support with weight management, smoking cessation, and physical activity. In direct response to community need, two additional interventions will also be launched, focused on falls prevention (for people aged 65+), and maternal health.

The role of pharmacies is key to ensuring residents are aware of the free service and know how to access it. As well as referring your customers directly into the service, Reed Wellbeing is inviting pharmacies to support direct delivery. You can:

  • Be paid to deliver our smoking cessation service directly to your customers (training is available)
  • Allow Reed Wellbeing to utilise space at your pharmacy to run its services.

If you are interested in hearing more please contact Tom Brunwin, National Operations Manager, on 07867 526 174 | tom.brunwin@reedmomenta.co.uk

PHARMACY CONTRACTS AND MANAGEMENT

PSNC WEBINARS AVAILABLE ON DEMAND

PSNC has now completed its round of Roadshows to support the Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework.

If you were able to attend or listen live to the webinar then we recommend that you watch the on-demand version which is now available.

The Digital CPCF Roadshow covers:
  • Understanding the five-year deal and what it means for your pharmacy
  • Why PSNC agreed to the deal, with the chance to ask questions of the Negotiating Team
  • Preparations for the introduction of the new Community Pharmacist Consultation Service
  • The Pharmacy Quality Scheme
  • Understanding how pharmacies need to start preparing for the future
  • The wider NHS context and your new local health and care structures
Access is via the PSNC website

Community pharmacy contractors can now access a recording of PSNC's webinar about this year's Pharmacy Quality Scheme (PQS).

During the webinar, the PSNC Services Team talked contractors through the new gateway and quality criteria for the 2019/20 PQS. As well as describing the differences from the previous Schemes, the presenters also outlined the guidance and resources developed by PSNC, plus where to find further information and support. CPAF 2019/20 FULL QUESTIONNAIRE

NHSE Cheshire & Merseyside have recently selected and written to a number of pharmacies instructing them to complete the full CPAF questionnaire.  Pharmacies have been selected using the national guidance which is available on the PSNC website.

If you have been selected the link and further instructions on how to access the full CPAF questionnaire will be provided by the NHSBSA at the end of October 2019 and will be available for online completion from Thursday 31 October 2019 –  Sunday 1 December 2019.  Please consider this task when planning your workload.

Where NHS England North West consider the full CPAF document has provided sufficient assurance, then a contract monitoring visit may not be required, however where sufficient assurance has not been provided a contract monitoring visit will follow.

Should your pharmacy be selected for a monitoring visit these will take place in January to March 2020.

If you require any support please contact the LPC and remember you can request the LPC to be present at the inspection if you wish.
SACUBITRIL/VALSARTAN (Entresto®) INCIDENT

There was a recent incident in Warrington where a patient’s pharmacy said they couldn’t get Sacubitril/valsartan (Entresto®) and asked the GP to prescribe an alternative. The GP prescribed an ACE inhibitor, which was taken with no wash out period.

MLCSU are are liaising with Pan Mersey APC to include a section on initiating a ACE inhibitor or ARB therapy after stopping sacubitril/valsartan in the policy statement to raise awareness of this with prescibers. They also want to raise awareness of this incident with community pharmacy colleagues and advise of the contact number available to obtain supplies of Entresto® is 0344 561 8899 Option 3.
RANITIDINE SUPPLY ISSUES

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has advised of a disruption to supply of all oral formulations of ranitidine until further notice.

The Supply Disruption Alert (SDA/2019/005) issued by DHSC states:

Action

All healthcare professionals in primary, secondary or specialist healthcare services who prescribe or dispense ranitidine, should for:

Licensed use for gastrointestinal conditions

  • Identify current patients prescribed ranitidine tablets, effervescent tablets and oral solutions, and:
    • Review to establish if ongoing treatment is still required.
    • If ongoing treatment is still required, then consider switching to an alternative treatment (see table below).

Please note:

  • It is recommended that omeprazole is the first-choice proton pump inhibitor (PPI) where clinically appropriate, as there are currently sufficient supplies to manage an increase in demand.
  • It is recommended that patients are not switched to alternative H2-receptor antagonists in the first instance as this may exacerbate a shortage of these products. Sufficient supplies will continue to be available to meet current demand.

Specialist indications

  • Consult specialist clinicians who use ranitidine to identify circumstances when ranitidine cannot be substituted with clinical alternatives.
  • Reserve any remaining supplies of oral ranitidine for circumstances where specialists consider there are no clinically appropriate alternatives.

Prescribers should work in close collaboration with their pharmacists to understand which clinical alternatives are available.

Send enquiries about this notice to the DH Supply Resilience Team supplyresiliencemd@dhsc.gov.uk quoting reference number SDA/2019/005.

To receive Supply Disruption Alerts directly from the Department of Health’s Central Alerting System (CAS) email: safetyalerts@mhra.gov.uk .
