Hi, Friend!

I hope you're doing well and settling in for the final two months of the year. In Wisconsin, it's already cold, but I love the coziness of fall: a crackling fireplace, a hot mug of cocoa, the silence of a fresh blanket of snow, just to name a few. I hope you're finding joy in it as well.

The past few months have been a whirlwind of new experiences for me. I've attended a new, huge conference, helped set up a massive book donation, and am learning the ropes of my new role as co-Regional Advisor within the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. That long title means that I, along with a more experienced leader (thank goodness for her!), plan events and help run Wisconsin's chapter. I'm finding I really enjoy the arena.

For now, though, here are some fun pictures. Be sure to read the captions. :)

SCBWI's annual summer conference in
Los Angeles

The biggest conference on children's books with some 1160 attendees!
Hangin' with my chica, Newbery-award-winning Meg Medina.
The dance party was THE.BEST.EVER. Woodstock theme but hoppin' club music. I danced like my life depended on it.

Books and Beer

That fun-loving blonde next to me is author Valerie Biel, who launched the most fun book club in Wisconsin, Books and Beer, held in Columbus. This was my third time as guest author, in conjunction with my third book, God Awful Rebel. The folks in the back of the pic should be up front because they are super fun, well-read, and ask wonderfully insightful, thought-provoking questions. Thanks for having me again, Books and Beer!

Donating 1,000 books to underprivileged kids

This sweet and lucky little girl got the 100,000th book given away by the Madison Reading Project! MRP is one of two organizations honored for their amazing work to promote literacy. SCBWI Director of Special Projects Kim Turrisi (left) presented 1,000 books from SCBWI members to MRP Executive Director Rowan Childs (right).
A tiny fraction of the donation. You wouldn't believe how much 1,000 books fills a room.
And look at how MRP gets its books to kids. A nifty book bus!
I helped at the drawing table. The kids' art was beautiful! :)
And some kids preferred filling in my tornado pattern to making something new.
We organizers and volunteers. Co-Regional Advisor Rochelle Groskreutz, is beside me in the front row. :)

Writing non-fiction, too!

I've been getting back into writing non-fiction, too, especially magazine articles. This one is for UW-Milwaukee's Alumni magazine about a Milwaukee composer's work on a new theatrical play. The play is based on a children's book by Wisconsin author Barbara Joosse. It's great to see Wisconsin talent flourishing and boosting each other!
