Google Event -- General Info Session for Non-Technical Students
Join Google for an Info Session diving into company culture, values, interview tips, and internship & full-time opportunities! Tar Heel alumni will share their experiences at Google and talk about the BOLD Internship and full time roles in HR, Marketing, Sales, Finance and more. While all students are welcome, this session will focus specifically on Non-tech roles.

Google Event -- Reception for Communities Underrepresented in Tech
Join an intimate discussion for students who identify as members of Black, Latinx, LGBTQ+, veterans and/or disability communities to join us to learn more about unique opportunities at Google. Current Google employees (and Tar Heels!) will also provide insights on the application process as well as how they engage with their identified communities at Google.

Crash Campaign
Crash Campaign is a fast-paced student competition that takes place over 24 hours in the Hussman School of Journalism and Media on Nov. 8 - 10. Students are able to participate in a unique professional opportunity that allows them to gain experience and showcase their talent. Students compete in teams to solve local business and nonprofit marketing problems using learned skills.

INTERNSHIPS

 

PAID INTERNSHIPS


Multiple Positions -- The Dallas Morning News / Multiple Locations
The Dallas Morning News, Texas’ leading newspaper, offers paid internships in news, copy editing, business, features, audience, sports and digital design/data. Internships are also available in photography, at the Washington, D.C., bureau and at their Spanish-language publication, Al Día. Most internships take place during the summer, but the sports internship occurs during the fall, generally starting around Labor Day.

Applicants must be enrolled in college and working toward a degree (associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate), or they may have graduated within six months of the internship start date. Previous daily newspaper experience is requested. College internships are full time for 10 to 12 weeks, and interns are paid $15 an hour for a 40-hour work week. Interns should have a car in good working condition.

PJI Internship -- POLITICO / Arlington, VA
POLITICO’s mission from the very beginning was to win the audience. They dedicate themselves to providing accurate, nonpartisan, impactful information to the right people at the right time so that they can act with confidence and speed. POLITICO experiments to avoid being disrupted and they have fun disrupting others. And they are not afraid to risk failure if it means being the best at what they do.

The POLITICO Journalism Institute is an educational program (running from May 26, 2020-June 5, 2020) offering intensive, hands-on training for at least 12 university students or recent college graduates who are interested in covering government and politics.

Programming for PJI includes interactive sessions, panels with industry leaders, mentor pairings with POLITICO journalists and an opportunity for participants to have their work published by POLITICO. Throughout the program, PJI participants split their time between American University in Washington, D.C., and POLITICO headquarters in Arlington, Va. All costs for attending PJI, including room, board and transportation, are covered by POLITICO.

Newsroom Engineering Internship -- The Washington Post / Washington, DC
How would you use code to help the Washington Post cover elections? Their newsroom engineering team is looking for curious, creative and upbeat students from interesting backgrounds to work with them to craft the next iteration of the live election night for our readers. Our team includes software engineers, data scientists, data visualization engineers and possibly you!

They do most of the software engineering in Node with Next.js and React. They do most of the data science work in Python. Their data visualizations are most often built with D3. They deploy applications to Amazon Web Services. If you work with tools like these, you'll likely fit in with them technologically. If you haven't worked with all of these tools yet, that's okay! None of them is a requirement for applying.

Public Relations Apprentice -- Day One Agency / New York, NY
Day One Agency is looking to add to their quickly-growing team with a self-motivated, paid PR Apprentice who will be instrumental in supporting their PR teams through day-to-day account assignments on marquee global accounts.

The two-month Apprentice Program is a paid program designed to offer the opportunity to learn about our award-winning business, gain valuable experience and work directly with team members as a lead into full time consideration for an Account Coordinator position at the conclusion of the apprenticeship. Since implementing the Apprentice Program, a number of their Apprentices have moved into full time positions.

Multicultural Advertising Internship Program
The American Association of Advertising Agencies (4A's), selects students to work at prestigious advertising agencies throughout the U.S., interact with advertising professionals, and gain valuable professional credentials to land
 that first job in the industry. The program not only pairs students with top agencies throughout the country and ensures paid internship experience, but also provides subsidized travel and housing in their host agency city.

It's a 22-week fellowship program (12 weeks of virtual online training and a 10-week agency internship experience)that will help students hone their skills in one of eighteen disciplines—including PR. Learn more about each discipline here.

Sports Media Internships -- Association for Women in Sports Media / Multiple Locations
AWSM will award up to eight female college students a $1,000 scholarship and placement in a paid internship in one of four fields: sports writing, broadcast production, social media and media relations.

The 2019 AWSM scholars spent their summers working at ESPN, MLB.com, USA Today, CNN, the Sporting News, Sports Illustrated and USA Softball. The 2020 placements will be announced at a later date.

Fall Internship Program -- Warren for President / Remote
The Warren for President team is building a grassroots movement and needs your help. They need skilled organizers, communicators, writers, designers, wonks and more who are interested in applying their talents and learning new skills to help make big, structural change. 

Interns will play a key role in helping build the grassroots organization they need to win the Democratic nomination for president. They will participate in campaign training, receive structured coaching and support, and work closely with staff to implement their plan to persuade and mobilize Democratic voters.

Editorial Intern -- Our State Magazine / Greensboro, NC
Our State magazine is hiring for their spring 2020 internship program! 

Internships positions are for 10 hours a week, unpaid, and offer opportunity for experience in several areas: research, proofreading, writing, and editing. Interns also help with fact-checking, indexing, assembling copy for the website, and other general duties for the print magazine and digital platforms. Our State interns work closely with the editorial team and have the opportunity to produce portfolio-worthy clips. They prefer students who are pursuing a degree in journalism or English. Experience working on a student or local publication is a huge plus.

Marketing Communications Manager -- National WIC Association / Washington, DC

The National WIC Association seeks a Marketing Communications Manager. The incumbent will manage NWA marketing, promotions, recruitment, and advertising strategies and activities for the Association and WIC. This includes producing marketing materials and publications for the Association, supporting a national WIC recruitment and retention campaign and advertising NWA conferences, events and products.

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in communications or related field and a minimum of three years of relevant work experience. A Master’s degree is preferred. The candidate will have excellent verbal and writing skills, graphic design skills and be proficient in Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Ability to manage major organizational social media platforms a must. HTML skills is preferable.

Audience Producer -- WAMU 88.5 / Washington, DC

WAMU 88.5 is the leading public radio station for news and information in the greater Washington, D.C. area. The Audience Producer serves as the primary editorial voice for the WAMU newsroom on social media. The position is also the driving force behind the newsroom’s daily editorial newsletter. In collaboration with newsroom leadership, the Audience Producer develops multi-platform audience engagement plans for reporters, beats, individual stories, special projects and other initiatives. The position moderates online conversations across multiple platforms and executes social media coverage during breaking news and major regional events. Graphic Designer -- UNC Admissions / Chapel Hill, NC

Information and Communications Specialist -- NC Department of Environmental Quality / Carteret County, NC

The primary purposes of this position is to support the mission of the DEQ's Division of Coastal Management in Morehead City through communications and outreach.
