INSIDE IRIS: October 2019

A Successful Summit

Approximately 90 people attended our 2019 IRIS Summit last month, a 50% increase from the year before! We had some great discussions at the intersection of research, policy, outreach, and the nuts and bolts of IRIS data.

A summary of the meeting is posted at iris.isr.umich.edu/iris-summit. And don't forget to save the date for next year: Sept. 24-25, 2020.

Deadline for researcher grants extended to Oct. 31

The deadline for IRIS' third round of researcher grants made possible by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has been extended to the end of October.

Projects must emphasize the use of IRIS data in research that addresses open issues on the study of science and technology and in science policy. To be eligible, applicants must be affiliated with an academic or research institution within the United States.

Previous recipients have come from the fields of communications, economics, industrial and systems engineering, and organization sciences, among others.

The awards of up to $20,000 are meant to support innovative research and may be used for personnel, equipment, supplies, travel, and other expenses.

Look for us at the APLU Annual Meeting in San Diego!

IRIS will have a table in the exhibit hall of the annual meeting of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities at the Hilton Bayfront hotel in San Diego, Nov. 10-12.

IRIS Executive Director Jason Owen-Smith and Communications Coordinator Dan Meisler will be meeting with current and potential new members, as well as attending meeting sessions.

Please plan to stop by our table, located just outside the Indigo Ballroom, if you'll be attending the meeting.

Coming soon: Employee Profile Report

Keep an eye on your inbox for the latest IRIS Employee Profile Report for your university, which will be delivered in the next several weeks. The report illustrates the impact of your institution's research enterprise through data on the employment and earnings of research-trained individuals that leave for jobs outside your university.

By linking university data with data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the report shows where research trained people work after they leave your university; how much they earn; and in what sectors they find employment.

The U.S. Census Bureau has instituted a new disclosure review procedure for this data involving "noise infusion." This process adds random numbers into earnings measures, providing an unpredictability that protects employee's privacy.
