Focusing On the Tremendous Value of ProCertification

NRCA's Jared Ribble's Open Letter To IRCC/CRU Contractors On The Value Of ProCertication

Dear IRCC members:

By now, you have heard a lot of buzz about NRCA’s ProCertification.Ô A mailed brochure may have come across your desk or an email landed in your inbox. With cluttered desks and busy schedules, the message of why ProCertification is important might get buried.

ProCertification ultimately is how an experienced and skilled worker can demonstrate his or her excellent workmanship. When the roofing industry can prove it has skilled installers in the workforce, perception of our great industry begins to shift upward. When the perception of the industry improves, we attract better-quality workers as they see a clear career path to strive toward. As workers move to better the quality of their skills to meet the national standards set by ProCertification, fewer mistakes happen on a job site and consumer confidence begins to rise.

ProCertification is important because it changes the public perception of our industry, and your individual companies.

By certifying your skilled and experienced workers, you’re not only doing your part to elevate the roofing industry but it’s also good for your business. When your workers take the simple steps to prove their skills, they separate themselves from companies that only make claims. Certifying your skilled workers shows a commitment to employing quality workers and communicates to your customers you care about protecting their important assets, giving your company a significant competitive advantage. Investing in your workers shows your employees you appreciate their knowledge and skills and want them to have successful, long-lasting careers with your company.
When you consider all the benefits of certifying your workforce, you quickly realize it can dramatically and positively affect your company.

Understanding the tremendous benefits to your company, and the roofing industry, what is keeping you from investing in a ProCertified workforce? I hear from a lot of contractors they are simply too busy. We understand. To help, NRCA has partnered with IRCC to set up an exam day for Jan. 10, 2020, when work tends to be slower. However, your workers still will need to complete and pass the knowledge portion of the exam before this date. For NRCA to have all the necessary mockups and materials ready for the Jan. 10, 2020, exam, we ask that you have your workers’ applications turned in by Oct. 31. This gives your workers ample time to complete the knowledge portion while NRCA prepares for the day of exams.

Some company owners have told me that because the economy is strong, they do not want to slow down to have their best workers take an exam. But what happens when the economy is not good and consumers are more discriminating with their dollars? Will your customers choose a company with ProCertified workers or a company that was too busy during the boom economy?

On occasion, an employer will be honest and tell me he or she is concerned a worker might fail the exam. NRCA is focused on setting up your workers for success and has created several resources you can find HERE to help your workers get prepared. Although there is no specific training required as a prerequisite to becoming ProCertified, I encourage your workers to take advantage of the prep courses CRU is offering in December that will serve as great refresher courses and confidence builders.

Looking through a wide-angle lens, ProCertification elevates the whole roofing industry and puts it on par with other trades. There are highly skilled workers across California and right inside your company. I encourage you to give these workers the opportunity to prove it.
Sincerely,

Jared Ribble
