Happy November Everyone!

This is such a wonderful time of year, a time of changing seasons and falling leaves and giving thanks. I am so very thankful for my Children's House family. This is another year of delightful children and we feel so blessed to be given the opportunity to spend our days with them.

Right now the children are learning about the opportunity to give to others.  In addition to the food drive for fire relief in Northern California that we just hosted (see below), the children are working hard to practice their endurance and determination for our annual Jog-A-Thon coming up next week. We are partnering with must! charities again, this year , and all proceeds will go directly to the NEW Boys & Girls Club, in Shandon. We will also be taking field trips to Loaves and Fishes to help sort food and to the Danish Care Center to sing to the elderly residents. Lastly, we will be hosting our annual blood drive for our own county’s blood bank on December 17th. It is so great to give back in these small but important ways. We are such an awesome community here and I am sure that this spirit of giving makes a huge impression on our children. So thank you so much for bringing food, giving blood, helping your children collect donations for the jog-a-thon and generally helping them to see how their hard work, determination, smiles and your generosity will benefit others.

As a way of giving thanks to you, our parents, the children are practicing for their Thanksgiving performance! This year it is on Nov. 22nd, the Friday before Thanksgiving since we will be giving you the entire week of Thanksgiving off to spend time together as a family. I hope you can join us for our annual performance and potluck. This, our first whole school gathering of the year, is sure to be memorable and special and a wonderful way to begin the Thanksgiving holiday. We hope to see you all there!
Thank you, once again, for all you do and for being a part of this family.
          In gratitude,
          Korey

Book Sale Donations Go Toward Fire Relief Food Drive!

Thank you all for your generous book sale donations last week! Not only did we clean out our school library, but we made some money as well! Some of that money will go toward purchasing new books for our library, but the Level Three Students who worked hard everyday on the Book Sale had an extra “payment” for their dedication.

Korey and Roxy took the 5 boys to the market with our bag of coins and dollar bills and the list from the Food Bank.  The boys were wise shoppers and filled about 8 large bags with about $75 worth of soup, tuna, rice, beans, cereal and much more. These bags of food were added to all the donations that you brought in, specifically for the families in Northern California who are in need of food due to the recent fires.

This food drive was spearheaded by the compassionate Buys family, who approached the O’Doan family, about using their trucks from their Pacific Coast Transportation company. They generously agreed to drive our donations to the Redwood Empire Food Bank in Santa Rosa. About 600 pounds of food was collected and it took about 40 students to load up that truck and see it off. It truly takes a village to help another village and we have no doubt the families affected by the Kincade Fire, will be thankful.

This year, as always, we will celebrate Thanksgiving with a family gathering. We will all meet in Steve’s Barn. The upper elementary children look forward to performing a play, "The Life of Maria Montessori", and all children will be singing songs. Please arrive promptly at 9:15 for this event.

Following the performance, we will gather for a lovely Thanksgiving brunch. Please bring a brunch/breakfast item, such as quiche, French toast, eggs, bacon, breads, muffins, fruits and beverages. NO PEANUTS!

PLEASE LET US KNOW WHAT YOU ARE BRINGING, BY SIGNING UP AT THE FRONT DESK.

Bring your food directly to the back patio tables before the performance and continue on to the barn and find a seat. Don’t forget to pick up your plates, platters, bowls and utensils when you leave.

•There will be NO morning care.
Toddler children MUST be accompanied by a parent
or other adult for the entire event (9:15 to 12:00pm).

For all other classrooms, if you cannot attend with your child,

have your child picked up by 12:00 pm.

School will close at 12:00 pm, immediately following our potluck. School will be CLOSED from November 25th to November 29th.

TODDLER

As we begin to float into fall, our amazing Toddlers have been doing some fun work in the classroom! Our days have been filled with pumpkins, changing seasons, new lessons and big buddies. It is such a joy to help these little people grow!

PRIMARY

Wow! October has been a very busy month for Primary! We had a visit from the Atascadero fire department and the SLO opera. We studied pumpkins, bats, skeletons and the solar system! So many fun things going on!

~KINDERGARTEN~

Straight from the mouths of some of our Kindergarteners...

"I'm giving my friend a spelling test."

"I'm adding on the board."

"I read the card and then put the object in or on what the card said."

"I’m labeling the solar system."

"I'm making my Picasso art."

"I’m doing the numbers to 100."

~LOWER ELEMENTARY~
Over the years, the greatest (and most common) feedback we hear from Montessori parents is, ‘Our children learned how to speak for themselves’. The saying, ‘You can always tell a Montessori kid, but you can’t tell him much!’ reflects Dr. Montessori’s core philosophies for the child, particularly in the 2nd plane of development. Foster curiosity and a love of exploration into new concepts, empower understanding and ownership of knowledge and provide meaningful opportunities for the creative self-expression of ideas. Above all, allow children the choice to participate, the self-direction to realize their vision and create a safe and loving environment that encourages risk-taking and eliminates fear. Our Monthly Book project presentations are some of many such opportunities, always voluntary, throughout the year.
What's New in the Computer Lab?

We have a Blog! Click on the image below to check it out. We use this for easy access to all the links I share with the students and for any computer homework or projects I want them to work on. We also feature student posts and student art from time to time. ~Dana
