Few books have captivated humanity’s imagination to the degree of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. This talk by Richard Stanton (Kotaku) begins with the 1818 text before getting elbow-deep in the viscera of the most imaginative and funny reinterpretations of this visionary work. We’ll join Robocop in a future Detroit, see the creature’s rebirth in post-war Iraq, and ask what the modern Prometheus means in the modern age. Come along for a bloody good time.

*Due to the nature of the material, this talk is not suitable for children.

Spooky Carlisle Castle, Sat 19 - Sun 27 October, 11am - 4pm. Grab your broomsticks for a bewitchingly brilliant family day out. There’s a fancy-dress competition every day - come in your best witch and wizard outfits to be in with a chance of winning. Or do you dare explore Carlisle Castle after dark? Join an eerie Torchlight Tour, 28 Oct - 1 Nov 6.30pm - 8.30pm. Storytellers will guide you through the darkness and take you on a bone-chilling journey through the past. With tales of ghosts, supernatural sightings and horrors from history, this is not a night for the faint-hearted. The event is suitable for children over the age of 14.

Embark upon a mystical journey at Holker Hall with The Wizarding School – an immersive theatre experience. 25 - 26 October. There will be workshops throughout both days: Pre-booking is essential. A pumpkin trail will take place in the gardens between 25 - 27 October. Follow the clues to find the hidden pumpkins! Remember to come dressed in your spookiest outfit – we want to see lots of little witches, wizards, ghosts and ghouls at the hall for Halloween.

Dare you visit Muncaster - one of Britain’s most haunted castles this Halloween?! They have a frighteningly lot going on! 25 - 27 Oct, 31 Oct, 1 & 2 Nov. The Muncaster Monster Cabaret, The Ghostly Grotto, The Scary Maze and many more otherworldly Halloween goings-on. Hold your nerve and select a ticket to suit your scare barometer.

There’s lots of spooky happenings going with The National Trust.

Allan Bank’s woodland has been taken over by some very spooky pumpkins. Venture into the woods this half-term 19 Oct – 3 Nov. See how many you can find… don’t forget to check inside the spine-tingling tunnel. You can draw the faces as you go and spot 6 or more to win a prize. Or unleash your creative skills at their pumpkin carving workshops on 26 & 27 Oct 11am – 3pm. Will you carve an animal, a face, a shape or something even spookier to put on your doorstep to scare the trick or treaters? They’ll provide the pumpkins, clear out the inside, and have all the tools you need to carve them so all you need to do is come along and have some haunted fun.

Hunt the pumpkins hiding in Acorn Bank’s woods this Hallowe’en half term, 17 Oct - 2 Nov 10am - 3pm. Pick up a free trail from the Visitor Welcome team when you arrive and see how many you can spot as you make your way through the spooky woodlands... The trail is on paths through the woodland which are suitable for pushchairs, mobility scooters and wheelchairs. Just be aware that after heavy rainfall they will be muddy.

Spooky stories are being told by the fire at Wordsworth House and Garden 24, 25 & 31 October 11.30am & 2.30pm. Listen to 10 min ghost stories by the costumed servants by the kitchen fire. Hear some of the ghostly tales William and his sister Dorothy might have enjoyed.

Join Windermere Jetty in their lake shore Learning Centre 20 & 27 October, any time between 10.30am - 3.30pm to hear the local folk legend of The Ferryman and The Crier of Claife. Then create a puppet of your favourite spooky character and retell the story in your own words.

These are just some ideas for inspirational days out, there are lots more here.

Enjoy your days out in a World Heritage Site recognised for its cultural landscape.
