LEF BREAKFAST DRAWS HUNDREDS

The Ladue Education Foundation and Alumni Association's (LEF) 13th Annual Community Breakfast on Oct. 12 was attended by over 220 parents, teachers, staff, students and community members. The guest of honor was Ms. Reva Davis, who taught social studies in the district from 1975-2004 and has been a Science Olympiad volunteer for over 30 years. She was introduced by Jasmine Huda, Ladue School District alumna ('97) and KTVI Fox 2 news anchor, who was also a student of Ms. Davis.

Guests mingled in the newly renovated high school, some perusing the Spirtas Art Gallery, and finally gathered in the Multipurpose room for breakfast. They were then treated to presentations by students who talked about the impact that LEF grants had made on them. Cindy Wang, a senior at Ladue Horton Watkins High School (LHWHS) and student grantee, received funding for Electronics for Everyone. The program was inspired by a club she founded to help senior citizens troubleshoot problems with their electronic devices. In addition, Madison Jackson and Caroline Washington, seniors at LHWHS, spoke about the impact of the grant that brought the Black History 101 Mobile Museum to the Ladue School District. Eric Brown talked about the extension of the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) engineering program to Ladue Middle School and brought examples of students' innovative creations.

Finally, new Ladue Schools Superintendent Dr. Jim Wipke shared his appreciation for the LEF and all the outstanding opportunities the Foundation helps to provide the students and staff of the district. He also provided an update on the district, including an outline of the programs and efforts on which the district is currently focused. "Yes, we are dreaming big and working hard," he told attendees. "That is simply who we are in the Ladue School District, and I'm so proud to lead this district and be a part of the wonderful work being done here on behalf of students."

FAMILY FUN

'DUE RUN 4 EDUCATION GROWS UP

Now in its seventh year, the LEF's Annual 'Due Run 4 Education brought out students, families and community members on Sept. 28 to enjoy some outdoor activity, snacks and music. For the first time, the 5K and 1-mile fun run were held at Ladue Horton Watkins High School's McKenna Plaza and newly installed track. The race was chip timed, and runners were filmed and projected on the stadium's digital screen.

"It's great to be able to offer runners of all ages and levels a quality race experience," says LEF Executive Director Julie Ferrie."but from all the smiles it's clear everyone just enjoys a chance to come together as a community,"

5K winners were Jim Seymour and Kathe Spence Myer.

OUR NEW STADIUM

LIGHTING UP THE NIGHT

The new football stadium at LHWHS has brought out big crowds for home games and the chance to highlight some of our local stars. At the Sept. 20 game, 1980 alumnus Manne Palan, along with friends and family of class of 1980 former football players Gregory Fox and Keith Barket, dedicated the stadium viewing platforms in their memory.

Before the game this Friday, Oct. 18, we will honor our first responders and military for their heroic and selfless contributions to making our communities and nations more safe and secure. The veterans memorial to Ladue Schools alumni who have died in active military duty will be rededicated in its new place of honor in McKenna Plaza. The tribute starts at 6:30 pm.
