etween the Atherton YMCA and the Varsity Building, Honolulu, Hawai'i
Tickets: $35 per person, $45 at the door
Docomomo US/Hawai'i is pleased to invite you to our Annual Tour Day,
celebrating this year's tour day theme "The Diversity of Modernism".
This year’s thematic focus reflects the efforts of Docomomo US and its local chapters to raise awareness of sites designed by minority and female architects, landscape architects, designers, and engineers, and of the designers themselves. In many cases, very little information is known about the designer or their design legacy and Docomomo US looks forward to casting light on the
significance and plight of these sites throughout 2019 and beyond.
The tour will traverse University Avenue between the Atherton YMCA and the Varsity Building, both of which have redevelopment rumors swirling around them. We will examine the ways in which architects designed buildings in order to respond to changes in the city, as well as how these buildings responded to technology, climate, the landscape, and popular modernist aesthetics. Additional stops include Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and Church of the Crossroads, and other surprises.
Please note: Ticket sales on EventBrite will end at 5:00pm Friday, October 25, 2019.
Walk-in tickets will be available for purchase on event day for $45.

ABOUT THE LOCATION AND ARCHITECT
|
|
Designed by Honolulu modernist architects Wimberly & Cook, this 5-story concrete Brutalist beauty was built to house the First National Bank when it opened in 1963 and is one of several circular structures to have gone up during the city’s building boom of the 1950s and 60s (including the Waikiki Circle Hotel and several other modernist bank buildings).
Its cylindrical shape is elevated above the ground, seemingly balanced upon a ring of glass, with banks of windows and vertical fins that act as sun shades exhibiting great shadow play on the building’s surface.
We are also including Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and Church of the Crossroads, and other surprises.

THE HAWAI'I MODERNISM LIBRARY
Introducing an all new database, with an ever-expanding collection of photographs, drawings and other archival materials detailing the story of modern architecture in the Hawaiian islands.
In an effort to broaden the dialogue about our modern heritage and reach out to researchers across the islands and around the world, Docomomo US/Hawai'i has made the majority of these archival materials free for non-commercial use. The library also features the 'DocoPhoto' Archive, a collection of images submitted by local Docomomo members. The library has geotag capabilities. With this application, members can now contribute their images by uploading them into the library.
