The Real Time courses play a vital role in developing a cadre of personnel who have seen field cases of FMD and have detailed knowledge of FMD diagnosis and outbreak investigation.The course includes training on FMD pathogenesis, clinical diagnosis, lesion ageing, correct samples, lab diagnostics, outbreak investigation, epidemiology and biosecurity.

The Self-Assessment Tool (SAT) is an spreadsheet-based questionnaire developed by the EuFMD and the OIE to assist countries in assessing their progress in the Progressive Control Pathway for FMD (PCP-FMD). The SAT, endorsed by the GF-TADs FMD working group has been used during training workshops for PCP support officers (PSO) held in Accra (March 2019), Bangkok (August 2019) and Dakar (September 2019). It starts by making an inventory of the strategic plans for FMD control that are applied, if any, by the country, such as a Risk Assessment Plan (supporting countries to progress from PCP stage 0 to 1), a Risk-Based Strategic Plan (to progress from stage 1 to stage 2), an Official Control Program (to progress from stage 2 to stage 3). The user of the tool is then directed through four sections and 15 categories, gathering 93 statements, based on the latest PCP guidelines, to be answered irrespective of the country stage. These four sections include Livestock and stakeholders, Surveillance and diagnosis, Veterinary Services, and Prevention, Control and evaluation.The SAT then generates a detailed output, adapted to the specific country PCP stage, supporting the Veterinary Services in the prioritization of the pending activities to progress through the PCP stages and in guiding and facilitating the communication with the relevant decision makers. It provides the framework for a standardized and harmonized country self-assessment over time and across regions. A yearly update would allow to review the country’s activities implemented to progress in the PCP, as well as assess the progress made based on the plans proposed and endorsed within the official roadmaps. The SAT is currently available in English. It will also be made available online through the PCP tool for review and communication (PCP-TRAC) developed by the EuFMD and Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale del Lazio e della Toscana (IZSLT). Online video tutorials are available.
