Your Community, Your Wind, Get Sailing!

What's Happening in November

Fall has arrived and the sailing center continues to buzz with activity.  Outside of high school sailing which runs through Thanksgiving, Women on the Water, Keelboat classes and open sailing are scheduled throughout the Fall with our coaches on site to provide a fun learning opportunity on the water.

Our next big event is our 13th Annual Oyster Roast Fundraiser which will take place THIS SUNDAY, November 17th from 3-6PM out of James Island Yacht Club.  There's still time to support the event and our mission by coming on board as a sponsor, donating a silent auction item or by purchasing your ticket to the event. Proceeds will go to support our work to provide public access to our waterways!

As we CELEBRATE our 20th year at Charleston Community Sailing, it is with heartfelt gratitude to you, our community of sailing enthusiasts, for sustaining OUR worthwhile work that has helped so many individuals gain access to the water.  Visit us online and stay connected on social media to see what is happening. We thank you for your continued support of our mission!

High School Sailing

Practices are getting shorter with the time change and temperatures are dropping.  Sailors please be sure you have the proper gear as the season continues.  With over 10 teams at local Charleston schools, high school sailing continues to grow in our area.  This year we had several Charleston connections at the Districts.
We are in the heavy season for the double handed division with three points events already sailed in Raleigh and Lake Norman.   Earlier this month 17 teams competed in Sunbury, GA for North Points #3. Wando won the event and is the top local team in the North rankings followed by James Island and Porter Gaud. There is still plenty of sailing between now and districts  in the Spring.  All teams want to be one of the top seven for a spot!

CCS Water Women

Congratulations to our team of women sailors who won the 2019 SAYRA Club Championship.  It was a one day regatta and the team was comprised of Amy Woodard, Katie Johnson, Wendy McKenzie and Mary Corbett.  Thank you for representing us in the Challenge and also in the 2019 J24 World Championship!
The team also includes Margaux Bacro-Duverger and Gina Shaw.  We followed the CCS Water Women from applying for the women’s berth, organizing logistics, training, holding fundraisers to finally competing in the J24 World Championship. In a few short months these six women came together and built something incredible. We are proud of your accomplishment and were honored to sponsor our Water Women at the event.

Sawin Wins Cressy Champs

BIG Congratulations to Lucas Saw who won the ISSA Cressy National Championship Regatta held in Santa Barbara this two weeks ago. Lucas is a junior at Crown Leadership Academy, Hobcaw Yacht Club is his home club and he’s been sailing a Laser since he was 13 years old. He started out in the D12 Laser group and is now top level training out of the Lauderdale Yacht Club. Congratulations on all your hard work and determination Lucas!

First Sail & Keelboat Classes

Are you ready to give sailing a try but not sure not if you’re ready to commit to a full class? Then come down for your FIRST SAIL or if you are ready to commit sign up for 8 hours of instruction with Beginner or Intermediate Keelboat.  Classes will be aboard a J24 and follow US Sailing curriculum and our instructors are nationally certified. To confirm your spot visit our website!

Support CCS

Our 13th Annual Oyster Roast Fundraiser serves as an excellent opportunity for you to publicly show a commitment to providing public access to Charleston’s waterways. There a variety of opportunities, all of which provide community impact and high exposure for your business. Become a sponsor, donate to the silent auction or volunteer the day of the event. Learn how YOU can support CCS!

Gear for Cooler Weather

Shorts to Salopettes?  Charleston weather is constantly changing but cooler air and water temperatures are in our future.  As a general rule the more advanced and the more seasons you sail, the more you will need.  We require all of our sailors to wear shoes and gear for safety and trust us sailing isn't fun when you are freezing cold.  Visit our website to learn more about gear and where to get what you need.

US Sailing Discount

Charleston Community Sailing is a US Sailing MVP Partner.  What does this mean for YOU?  Through our MVP Program, you’ll receive up to 20% off your US Sailing membership dues.

We NEED Boats/Trailers:

Got a 16-22 ft. boat or trailer sitting in your yard that your not using? Please consider donating to CCS which is easy, philanthropic and offers potential tax advantages. In return for the donation, we will issue a receipt and you can relax knowing that we will use the boat or the proceeds of the sale - to make it possible for all to experience the delights of being on the water.  We are specifically in need of trailers, safety boat hulls or a rib.

Volunteer Opportunities:

We need your help! Volunteers can help with everything from boat maintenance, regattas (on or off the water), Summer Sailing, Buddy Sail, SC Special Olympics, Office/Admin work, STEM Education, fundraising, social media and special events.  If any of this sounds interesting or is something you are passionate about—we hope you will consider volunteering with us.  You can sign up to volunteer online
