SunSense Certification program for schools

The SunSense Certification acknowledges and celebrates schools that have created a sun safe environment to protect students and staff.

Through the certification program, schools will be provided FREE tools and resources for staff, students and parents to assist in implementing the key components of SunSense including:
  • Teaching guides and presentations
  • Webinar for teachers/staff
  • Info card for parents
  • Fun items for positive reinforcement of SunSense practices (UV bracelets, stickers)
  • Posters
  • Policy development guidelines and samples
  • Guidance on shade structures
Schools can earn the title of being a SunSense school by completing a seven step process and earning points with each step completed. Schools that earn enough points are awarded with a gold, silver or bronze level SunSense Certificate.

By addressing key considerations around sun protection, education and behaviours, and embedding sun safe practices into everyday routines, schools can build a culture of sun safety.

To learn more about SunSense and how to become certified visit SunSense or email sunsense@ontario.cancer.ca.

Dental screenings at your school

Just a reminder that Public Health dental hygienists and dental assistants will be coming to all schools in Waterloo Region to screen JK, SK, and Grade 2 students. Other grades may be screened as well.

A dental screening is a quick visual inspection with a sterilized mouth mirror. Children may qualify for the Healthy Smiles Ontario program which offers free dental treatment. Public Health also has two dental clinics that offer preventative and restorative treatment for eligible children.

If a child is in pain, parents do not have to wait for the school dental screening. They can call the dental program at 519-575-4400 ext. 5010 to book a screening at the Region's dental clinics in Waterloo or Cambridge or at a community health centre in St. Jacobs, downtown Kitchener, or Cambridge.

Cannabis Information Kit

'C' is for Cannabis! 'V' is for Vaping!

Have your students been saying the ‘C’ or ‘V’ words lately?

There has been a significant increase in youth vaping and concerns about the recent health issues and deaths related to vaping.

Also, with cannabis legalization and edibles soon to be for sale, there has been curiosity from youth and concerns from parents.

To address this, Public Health has developed both a Vaping Information Kit and a Cannabis Information Kit for educators. The kits provide students with short lessons, activities, and games about what cannabis and vaping are and information about the health concerns.

Where can I get a kit?

Copies of both kits have been distributed to schools. Teachers can also download the kits through Google Docs and Public Health, or sign out a complete kit through the Public Health Resource Library.
