An annual festival honoring the history and heritage of Greenwich Village

Dear Friends,

I’m pleased to be able to write to you as a supporter of The Village Trip with photos and an update from this year’s festival – a month ago already, and under beautiful blue New York City skies.
I was thrilled to meet some of you fleetingly during the course of The Village Trip and I hope all those who came had a good time – whether to hear music or to participate in a discussion, or take part in Adriana Trigiani’s amazing creative writing session, to attend one of our partner events at Joe’s Pub, or just to hang out. We were privileged to have some wonderful performers and while it’s invidious to single out any one of them I’d like to mention Steve Earle, a Villager these past fourteen years, who wove into his set the best of local history lessons. It was an eloquent summing up of The Village Trip mission!

It was an honour to have the great David Amram return at Artist Emeritus, sprinkling magic and memories wherever he went, and encouraging young artists. David has experienced a lot of festivals in his busy life – he came to The Village Trip between Farm Aid and Lowell Celebrates Kerouac – so it’s especially pleasing that he sees a great future for this one in Greenwich Village. He writes:

“The possibilities for this festival are limitless and make it feasible for it to become an international event. This is what happened in the summer of 1957 when I was with the New Shakespeare Free Festival in the Park, as their first composer and music director. In spite of all the struggles, sixty-two years later this festival is bigger and better than ever.

“The Village Trip has the same mission. To uplift, to entertain and to celebrate the arts for all New Yorkers and their families and all people from around the world who come to visit New York City's special oasis, Greenwich Village.”

Local support, civic and business, has been very important throughout The Village Trip adventure and as we move forward we aim to develop downtown partnerships to the benefit of all concerned. As Andrew Berman, Executive Director of Village Preservation, puts it:

“The Village Trip’s work supports and celebrates Greenwich Village, while also enticing a broader audience into the neighborhood. All of this dovetails with our work of highlighting the need to preserve and protect the cultural and architectural heritage of, and support the small businesses in, our neighborhoods.”

We already have lots of ideas for The Village Trip 2020 – but we’d be happy to hear yours. Please feel free to share your thoughts at info@thevillagetrip.com and please do spread the word!

Thank you to our sponsors, partners and donors – and, once again, to you.

With all good wishes for the coming holidays.

Liz Thomson,
Co-founder and Executive Producer
