Orleans Public Defense Budget Hearing

Orleans Public Defenders request your support at their budget hearing on Thursday October 31st. 
Pack the council chambers, submit a card in support of full and equitable funding! Hearings start at 9 a.m.
You can also join Orleans Public Defenders at the Secondline for Equal Justice on November 2nd. The second line will start at Orleans Parish Criminal District Court at noon and end at Kermit's Treme Mother-In-Law Lounge at 4 p.m.

Sign the Statement of Support to Increase Funding for Quality Early Care and Education 

The future of New Orleans depends on our city’s investment in our children. The New Orleans Campaign for Grade-Level Reading and its partners have petitioned Mayor LaToya Cantrell and the New Orleans City Council to take actions over the next year to create dedicated annual funding in the city budget for high-quality ECE for children, birth through age three. Click here to see the full sign-on letter of support. To sign on, please email Jillian Delos Reyes at JillianR@UnitedWaySELA.org

Become a Power Voter

While there are many ways we can change Louisiana’s system for the better, the first and most important is to become actively engaged in the political system. That means becoming a Power Voter. Take the Power Voter Pledge and vote, participate in the upcoming census, and hold your elected officials accountable.

City of New Orleans Submits Its First Human Rights Report to the United Nations

The City’s newly established Office of Human Rights and Equity has submitted its first independent report to the United Nations Universal Periodic Review. The United Nations uses the Universal Period Review (UPR) process to collect information from local human rights organizations around the world. Youth involvement with the criminal justice system was an area of specific concern, specifically around youth interactions with law enforcement, zero-tolerance policies in schools, and juvenile detention practices and conditions. Read the report here.

SNAP Recipients May Apply for Replacement Benefits for Food Lost Due to Tropical Storm Olga

More than 71% of SNAP participants in Louisiana are in families with children. Share with families in your networks to support our students in coming to school healthy and ready to learn!
Recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits may be eligible for replacement benefits for food purchased with SNAP benefits and lost due to Tropical Storm Olga, if they report their loss to the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) by Thursday, Nov. 7. SNAP recipients must apply for replacement benefits. 
To Apply
  1. Complete and sign the SNAP 38 Form
  2. Submit it in one of the following ways on or before Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019:

If you cannot complete and submit the form by Nov. 7, call 1-888-524-3578 by Thursday, Nov. 7, and provide your parish, dollar value of food loss, length of time without power, and within 10 days of reporting the loss to DCFS by phone call, send your completed and signed SNAP 38 Form to DCFS, as described above.

New study outlines why New Orleans teachers leave, and provides a plan to get them to stay

Between the 2016-17 and 2017-18 school years, for instance, 29% of the city's teachers didn't return to their jobs — resulting in 900 classroom openings that had to be filled, according to the group New Schools for New Orleans. Education officials are working on a plan to find and keep quality teachers. Among other things, the plan seeks to create a stronger brand to attract new hires to New Orleans schools and to reduce overall attrition by 5 percentage points by 2022.  Read the full article here.

Many parents are confused about how public education now works in New Orleans, report says

According to a report from the Cowen Institure, many parents still don't understand how it all works. The report also found that nearly half of public school parents surveyed think the local school system has neither improved nor gotten worse since charter schools came on the scene. Read the full article here.

Schott grantee partner Journey for Justice Alliance (J4J) has been at the forefront of this work, most recently inviting organizers from Puerto Rico to its conference in Chicago and sending a delegation to witness and support the struggle firsthand. Music Educators PD Clinic: Teaching Strategies for Empowering Learners

Join veteran music educators Herman J. Jones and Keith Hart for a dynamic Professional Development Clinic designed to give music educators time-tested ways of structuring learning for student success! Show up to City Council Chambers October 31st and November 1st and demand that our elected officials #PutHousingFirst!Please call your Councilperson and the Mayor’s Office and ask them to build more units, dedicate funds to homelessness, and enforce short term rental policies!

Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences: Building Self-Healing Communities at Broadmoor Arts & Wellness Center

The Mayor’s Neighborhood Engagement Office announces that registration for the 2019 Neighborhood Summit is now open.
