Director's note

Social and science in focus

Earlier this week I was invited to one of the PhD forum meetings. The forum brings together PhD students from all four partners, offers an arena for discussing common problems or opportunities, and aims to make it easier - and also more fun - to be a Bjerknes student. I was very happy to see that so many attended the meeting and took active part in the discussions. Thanks to Leonidas for organizing and Elina for taking care of the new students. What you are doing is very important.

One concrete result of the meeting is already in your mailbox: An invitation to be part of the Bjerknes team for the Bergen City Marathon that will take place 25th of April next year - so far into the future that you shouldn't worry about your present physical condition. In your mailbox you also have an invitation to the Bjerknes Christmas party that will take place at the Nansen Centre in exactly two weeks. To avoid endless climate and health discussions, you are allowed to bring your own meat or vegetables.

It is difficult to keep track of all the new knowledge that is being produced at the centre. One measure is the many excellent papers being published. So far in 2019 we have registered close to 200, but time lag in registration makes the actual number higher. Of the yet-to-be registered is an opinion paper in EOS where Øyvind, Are, Marius and others argue for a synoptic ocean survey in the Arctic, and a research paper in Nature Communications where Eirik, Nil, Kikki, Ulysses and others for the first time have managed to separate the Antarctica and Greenland contributions to sea level change in the last interglacial.

It will be a cold but cloud free weekend. Spend it wisely.

News from the Bjerknes PhD forum
The PhD Forum aims to bring together PhD Candidates from all Bjerknes
partners to create a compact PhD community under the Bjerknes umbrella.
This is also why our forum is represented from people from almost every
Bjerknes partner. The concept of each meeting reflects the needs of the
candidates: it should be social, it should be fun, and it should bring
knowledge.  In our meeting this week, the director of Bjerknes gave as a
detailed outline about the opportunities we have within the Bjerknes
Centre and in particular the outreach activities available. We had an
open discussion on how we can improve things and have a more active role
in the various activities.

It is great to see the forum expanding month by month in terms of
participation. This time more than 30 participated. This was exactly our
goal from the very beginning. Not to create just another meeting place,
but an active forum that will hopefully last for many years. Our next
meeting will be on Wednesday 11th December at the Institute of Marine
Research (IMR). We are looking forward to decrease the distance between
our Institutes and get some feedback on the different research
activities our colleagues are involved in. We have also arranged a free
visit to the Bergen Aquarium. I suppose penguins will be a bit happier
with the wintry conditions during the last days…

As I said before: PhD Forum = Knowledge + Social + Fun

Noel Keenlyside co-leads CLIVAR´s new research foci: “Tropical Basin Interactions”

Last year´s open call for proposals for new Research Foci landed 5 outstanding applications covering a wide range of topics, all relevant to WCRP science in general and CLIVAR in particular. After careful evaluation the Scientific Steering Group decided to support (TBI).
The main goal of TBI is to elucidate the complex two-way interaction between the tropical basins and to quantify the benefit to climate prediction. TBI will initiate and facilitate research activities on seasonal to multi-annual variability and predictability, thus complementing the on-going CLIVAR Decadal climate Variability (DCV) Research Foci.
The TBI group is chaired by Ingo Richter (JAMSTEC) and Noel Keenlyside (Geophysical Institute, UiB & Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research). It brings together scientists with different competences, at various stages of their careers, and from diverse backgrounds. The areas of expertise include basin interaction (Ping Chang, Fan Jia, Fred Kucharski, Xichen Li, Yuko Okumura, Regina Rodrigues, Malte Stuecker, Andrea Taschetto), observational analysis (Michael McPhaden, Hiroki Tokinaga), proxy data (Steffen Hetzinger, Miriam Pfeiffer, Y. Okumura), seasonal to decadal climate prediction (Susan Bates, P. Chang, N. Keenlyside, I. Richter),  climate change (Roxy Koll, H. Tokinaga), and climate model biases (P. Chang, N. Keenlyside, I. Richter). The members of the RF are currently preparing the full proposal and it is expected that they will start their activities early next year.
The TBI will bring important research findings for climate prediction in the North Atlantic Sector and thus fits well to the objectives of the Bjeknes Climate Prediction Unit. Ingo Richter's visit to BCCR last year contributed to the development of the proposal.

CLIVAR is a core project of the WRCP. For more news on CLIVAR visit their homepage http://www.clivar.org/

BCCR social lunch
Welcome to join our weekly BCCR social lunch on Wednesdays from 12 at Albatross!
This is a nice opportunity to communicate with people working in BCCR. It would also help new BCCR people to find friends and know environments through the communication.

The portrait

Name: Zoé Koenig

Position: PostDoc within the framework of the Nansen Legacy project with Ilker Fer and Arild Sundfjord (NPI).

How long have you been at BCCR? A little over a year

Education: I did all my studies in Paris, and I have a PhD in physical oceanography.

Background: I did my PhD on the Atlantic Water circulation and properties North of Svalbard, based on data from autonomous drifting buoys and model outputs. After my PhD, I did a one-year postdoc in France looking at the cooling of the West Spitsbergen Current from glider data.

What is it you do exactly at work? With this PostDoc, I am still looking at the region North of Svalbard but at smaller scale as I am know interested in small-scale processes, turbulence and mixing.

Why climate research? I have always been passionate by the ocean, spending all my holidays as a kid on a sailing boat or by the Ocean. I guess ending up studying it is just a normal continuity.

What extracurricular activities do you have? I like sailing, climbing and skiing during winter.

Do you have a favourite song, band or artist? I think my favorite song is the soundtrack of Footloose

Your favourite food? Cheese! Raclette and fondue, I am waiting for the winter season to start eating that again.

The best and worst about Bergen? The best is probably the proximity of the mountains and of the sea. I thought when I arrived that the worse will be the rain, but I actually got used to it!
