DS: Below are some key areas that have changed in the 2019 version of LM-79.
LM 79-19
Source: lightlabint.com
Electrical Circuitry: Limits have been established for laboratory electrical circuitry and equipment. This is intended to improve the uniformity of the electrical measurements taken during testing – particularly when rapid transitions in current are present.
Angular Intervals: The language for defining the angular intervals for goniometric measurements have been more clearly defined. This includes angular measurements of chromaticity for color uniformity as well as integration.
Stabilization Criteria: The criteria for the stabilization of the test subject has been changed from 15-minute intervals to 10-minute intervals. When coupled with a good pre-burning process, this can help to increase efficiency in the laboratory.
Tolerance Intervals: Some metrics such as ambient temperature have been specified using tolerance intervals. This now defines the acceptable range in terms of the allowable deviation combined with the uncertainty of the measurement. The target values have remained the same, but the quality of the laboratory’s equipment and process has been taken into account. This should improve uniformity across laboratories.

Convenience Will Deliver Sales and Loyalty
Source: electricaltrends.com
Buyer behavior is changing. Convenience is now a differentiator. Customers expect it. It’s the new definition of service. It started in the consumer world and is quickly transitioning to B2B buyer expectations, and it will become distributor reality (and is defined as “ease of doing business” by distributors in considering manufacturers.)

Improving White Light-Emitting Diode Luminous Efficiency and Color Rendering
Source: semiconductor-today.com / Mike Cooke
Researchers based in China have combined phosphors, quantum dots and metal nanoparticles to create blue-to-white light converters for indium gallium nitride (InGaN) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with simultaneously improved luminous efficiency and color rendering [Rongqiao Wan et al, Optics Letters, vol44, p4155, 201]. Often improved color rendering comes at the cost of reduced luminous efficiency.

Nanolaser Thinner Than a Human Hair Would Work Within Human Tissue
Source: newatlas.com / Nick Lavars
Scientists at Northwestern and Columbia universities have developed a tiny new kind of bio-compatible laser that could, theoretically, be implanted inside living tissues without causing them damage. Measuring less than 150 nanometers in thickness and requiring minimal amounts of power, the researchers are hopeful that further down the track the microscopic device could come to open up new treatments for neurological disorders and diagnosis of diseases.

How Strobe Lights Can Help Teenagers Sleep Almost One Hour More Per Night
Source: new atlas.com / Rich Haridy
Combining an experimental light treatment with cognitive behavior therapy has resulted in a sample of teenagers increasing their total sleep time by around 45 minutes a night. The Stanford University study found subtle light flashes in the last few hours of sleep can help adjust an adolescent’s circadian rhythm.

Team Member: Dicky Liu; Adviser: Can Bayram
A Brighter, Greener Future: LEDs are transforming the lighting industry, but widespread adoption of solid-state lighting is hindered by high upfront costs and green LEDs' inefficiencies. For brighter, more efficient, more affordable full-spectrum phosphor-free lighting, Cubic LEDs are created on industry-standard silicon substrates nano-patterned with U-shaped grooves to facilitate the growth of pure, defect-free cubic phase gallium nitride. Cubic LEDs are cheaper, more efficient, brighter, produce less heat than conventional lights and LEDs, and can reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission globally.
