1. Updates

Hello urbanists!

We hope November is treating you well so far. We don't have any new articles of our own to share with you this week, sadly - But hey, this is something you have the power to fix. That's right, my urbanist friend, you yourself can have your thoughts and words shared with our very glamorous audience, and featured on our snazzy website. Sufficiently enticed? Click on over to find out how you can write for us and fulfil your dreams. Alternatively, send us an email

In this issue, we're bringing you news on Manhattan's urban imperfections, events on Designing the Future, opportunities to submit papers on food systems, cycling, water, and climate resilience... and much more.
As always, please do send in your pictures and work -  we'd love to feature them in our newsletter. Head over to Facebook, Twitter, and our website pages for more updates.

2. Urbanist News around the World

  • Rising Seas Will Erase More Cities by 2050, New Research Shows (The New York Times)
    • Rising seas could affect three times more people by 2050 than previously thought, according to new research, threatening to all but erase some of the world’s great coastal cities.
  • In a Dystopian Age, We Need a Revival of Utopian Thinking
    • Science fiction, especially Blade Runner, appears to have spawned so many dystopias that dystopia itself has become banal. This article argues that we need a new utopianism that embraces the city.
  • For Urban Sustainability, What Research Do We Need Now? (The Nature of Cities)
    • How can we speed things up? For scientists, if they are going to help make cities more sustainable, what research is critical to help city decision makers make decisions?
  • Learning from Manhattan's urban imperfections (CNU)
    • New York is a great city that breaks many rules of urban planning. Here's what its imperfections can teach us about city building.

    • This film documents the “South African City Futures: Visualising the Futures of our Neighbourhoods” project undertaken in 2014.
  • Secrets of the world's most livable city (CityLab)
    • "Cities should be nice to live in!" they say. "Duh", your jaded 90s self replies. Even if you are suffering from Livability-ranking-fatigue, you might be interested to read what it is about Vienna which sees it repeatedly bagging the top spot on those aforementioned pesky rankings.
  • Open Data Shines a Light on Cities’ Top Challenges (Next City)
    • From reports of potholes and broken streetlights to complaints about garbage and vandalism, cities process more non-emergency requests from residents than ever before. Cities are now becoming “smart” and allowing citizens to make requests online or by using mobile apps.
